Watching the World Cup ref talking to the players from Greece and Costa Rica I'm wondering what language is he speaking lol

Is it naive of me to think that English is the unofficial language of the world?

No.
Most not-really-poor countries have children lean English as children. It's one of Germanies official languages, last I checked.

article talks about how all the refs were required to know english so they could talk to each other. from 2006 but i bet its still true.

World languages change every so often. Before English took over, it was French. Before French, it was Latin...

Latin is the root base of atleast 60% of the languages out there.

I seriously doubt that is accurate... The most common Romance languages spoken today are Italian, French, Romanian, Spanish and Portegeuse. I actually there are more Germanic languages than Romance languages in use today...
