😳😳😳 why have I never seen {Blazing Shoal} before and why does it have to be banned in modern??  Haha I would love to play that!

I don't know about the combo, but the dude is.
{Painter's Servant} + {Grindstone}. That's why I thought it was banned.

Grindstone is too old.  But it isn't banned.
It isn't legal.

Then we need to reprint fow.  ;)
It's uncommon, so no reserved list

*to make it modern legal
Free spells would make Blue too dominant. That's not going to happen.

Bad choices make bad gaming experiences.

Prplprince

The reason blazing shoal is banned an FoW or a spell like FoW will never be in modern is free spells are usually to broken for modern where you can't match broken for broken. The only way free spells can be printed are with extreme draw backs like  {Intervention Pact} or  {Slaughter Pact}. Even those are very good when used correctly.

The pacts aren't free. They have a belated mana cost.

Prplprince

They are "free" initially then you lose if you don't pay the cost. That's the closest to modern will and should get to free spells

Shoal cycle, phyrexian mana cast, traps. There are a lot of things that can be free. Modern should get some free spells, standard shouldn't.

Mattao19

Not to argue but there are lots of "free spells" in modern but there shouldn't be too many more IMO most are broken

I'm talking playables here. When's the last time you saw someone use one of the other shoals or Pmanas? I think  {Archive Trap} and a few of the pacts are the only ones I've see
Did you just ask when the last time I saw someone use Phyrexian mana is? {Dismember}, {Gitaxian Probe}, {Birthing Pod} and those are just what comes to mind

So, essentially, there are a lot that are used and they are pretty op'd.

Yup, then Travis Woo took the white out of the old Delver list from Scars-Innistrad standard, threw in some modern counter magic (including Shoal), {{Phantasmal Bear}}, and {{Ninja of the Deep Hours}}. Mono-U players proceeded to snap it up.

It isn't that good of a deck anymore since people know how to play it. The deck literally is the same 75 cards, too.
