If {athreos, god of passage} dies along with the creatures that gave him devotion, would his ability trigger?

FustyDavorite

It wouldn't. His ability requires a creature to hit the graveyard, and when he dies he's in the graveyard and his ability does not trigger. That's why some abilities state "When [this creature] or another creature dies, [ability]."

I'm trying to think of an example, but I got nothin

I know it won't trigger itself...but if {xathrid necromancer} is able to trigger when it hits the yard...shouldn't athreos' as well?

FustyDavorite

Xathrid states "when Xathrid Necromancer or another human creature dies... etc" where Athreos does not state himself in his ability. That's what makes the difference.

Giggle the Draco Genius

The ability would trigger, mtg has a simultaneous ruling that states if things happen at the same time they all see it happen.

I can't find the exact ruling right now but here is the ruling from {xathrid necromancer} that has a good example of this.

7/1/2013    If Xathrid Necromancer dies at the same time as another Human creature you control, its ability will trigger twice.

FustyDavorite

Oh man I completely read the question wrong. I thought you were asking that if Athreos died while devotion was reached would his ability trigger. Sorry!
