If I pay 4 to cast {Chalice of the Void}, can my opponent {Abrupt Decay} it?

Yes. The chalice fails to counter abrupt decay.

I believe so, because of abrupt decay's firsts ability, which would cancel the ability of chalice of the void.

the gatherer for {chalice of the void} says its cmc is 0. and {abrupt decay} can't be countered. so its a valid target and will resolve.

X in a cards mana cost is deemed to equal zero when the card is in every zone other than the stack. When it's on the stack x is whatever the controlling player decided it was. Once it becomes a permanent x becomes zero.

It's half the point. The question was can abrupt decay be used to get rid of the artifact. Being a legal target would be integral to the question.

Yea i guess to be fair he didnt specify if he was asking about countering or the CMC i just assumed he was asking about countering cuz thats what most people answered to

If the wording on chalice stated players could not cast cards with CMC = to the counters then I would say yes.  But clearly the chalice allows players to cast the spell but then is countered.  So I agree you could cast the decay and the chalice would not be able to counter it.  Also the counters on the chalice could not put the chalice above 3 CMC since the XX on the chalice would always equal 0 in regards to calculating its CMC
