I sold a bunch of my cards and now i want to take that money and invest it into modern cards thatll only last or go up in value, i know shocklands are definitely good, but what else? Maybe some emmys or something instead?

Edit: also something that has virtually no chance of ever being banned o.o

rarehuntertay

Fetch lands, goyf, bob all come to mind

MisterJH

I dont like bob or goyf though haha thats my main reason for not getting them, theyre rock solid great cards but i think theyre kind of just boring as far as modern cards go
true-name
Emmy
Certain lands

I want to invest in something cool to look at haha, are the major eldrazis all safe investments? I love those

Walkhard

As long as the current meta holds up. Cards rise and fall with what people are playing. But I'd say they should hold value and not go down, but they may not go up anymore

If I were to do this I would look at the top tier decks and make something similar. Or look at the common cards in most of those decks. What keeps the cards at a high value is they are used most often.

MisterJH

It seems like the safest bet is starting to build a modern landbase

Land can fluctuate a lot, I've been investing in cards that have a lower chance of being reprinted like the major eldrazis. You also have to think about value in terms of what people are trading. If a card is being traded, it's still in circulation which means the price will be lower than cards people are seeking but not trading. Your best bet is to pick a unique card/mechanic and buy up as much of it as possible. The more you have, the less in circulation, and supply/demand would keep prices from dropping too much unless the card/mechanic is reprinted. Works the same way as money, the more in circulation, the less it's worth.

I understand what youre saying but could you give me some examples/ideas? I think kozilek would be good since if any edlrazi got banned i feel as if itd be emy

I don't mean to deciate from the thread's intention but it's worth mentioning that modern isn't as stable as one might think, and legacy is a better format to invest in long-term. It is less affected by newer cards and cards get banned less often.

But im more interested in playing modern because of the popularity and lower total proce cost. Would my best bet hoenstly be shocks and fetches since those are probably always going to be played

Coffee Vampire

Yeah that's a very good point. Modern has the most support you get can for such a wide card pool. Most LGSs support it in the form of weekly tournaments. I would invest in a playset of:
Every shockland
Every fetchland (I'd wait to see if they reprint them to start SERIOUSLY buying them)
{Liliana of the Veil}
{Cryptic Command}
{Abrupt Decay}
{Scavenging Ooze}
{Mutavault}
{Thoughtseize}
(the last 3 won't be reprinted for a VERY long time)
{Snapcaster Mage} (this one will be much higher than what it is now)

That's all I could think of right now but I think it's a pretty decent list.

I have a foul snappy Mage as well as a play set of non-foils. If anyone wants one PM me

"Investing" in a format where every card can (and most likely will at some point) be reprinted doesn't seem like a good idea. With modern PTQ season coming relatively soon, I wouldn't really recommend buying much of anything unless you are going to actually use them during that time.

I do believe that the eldrazi would be a decent choice if you wanted to get something, since they're plane-specific.

Oh, also {Spellskite}

MisterJH

I think ill use my moolah to get 1-2 playsets of shocks and an eldrazi, itll satisfy my love of cool cards and the little voice that tells me to be reasonable

Aladormax

I usually start by looking at the reserved list for cards to invest in. Then I check banned lists, and when the card was last printed. This helps me decide if a card will see a reprint at any point or not. If the card is very likely to see or has just seen one that means that the price will fluctuate. If it sees play in more than 3 decks that win major tournaments it will spike and hold. Lands are an unusual case as they will be the most used, but least reprinted of cards. This will mean that they only will hold the price until reprints are announced, case in point being shock land pricing. Full art lands from the sets that they were in are a good investment, but are not ungodly expensive or immune to price changes. Legendary creatures that gain value are good to pick up, as flavor reasons will see very few reprints for them. Staples such as  {Brainstorm} or  {Lightning Bolt} will be steady as they are beyond the power level of what is printed.
