How would I explain this?

so my opponent {show and tell}ed {emrakul, the aeons torn} onto the battlefield.  he didn't believe that he didn't get his extra turn, but whatever.  he gave into me.

I played {karakas} did some stuff then passed.

I told him to tell me when he hits declaring combat.

He then said that I don't receive priority at the beginning of combat, and that he can just skip to attacking with annihilator 6 and kill all of my lands (their my only permanents) and hit me for 15.

How would I go about explaining that I do receive priority during combat, and before he attacks?

"Before you declare attacks/end of your main phase: I tap kakaras to return Emmy to your hand."

Als in re to emmy's extra turn: show and tell puts a card onto battlefield from hand,  therefore it is not considered "cast" as no mana was spent, rather you were able to "play" a card from your hand without paying its "casting cost"

MuggyWuggy

It's at the end of his main phase,,,,you're allowed to play instants once he goes thru upkeep.....

Your friend is just wrong at this point if he denies your kakaras ability (which is instant)

I think he just wanted Emmy to pound face and got mad you rejected it

People hate it when you destroy/delay their game winning bombs

I'm pretty sure we can call this resolved tho

If you couldn't cast or activate abilities during an opponents turn...magic would be very different

I always like to let people know after they misplay in small tournaments if they made a huge error.

But I won't interrupt the misplay in progress.

I've learned from my misplays after the fact:
IE - you can redirect skullcrack to a PW

I would've won 1st if I knew this several months ago, but I was unaware of the rules of PW

You have to learn all aspects of the game before you start placing 1st at small tourneys

There is also the beginning of combat phase between 1st main and declare attackers phase where an instant or anility could bounce the creature.

Haha. Yeah you were right. Some people just really want their way.

Mr_Fahrenheit

Show him the combat phase in action on mtgo. That's what helped me when I first started playing.

That's where I wanted to do it, but he disbelieved that it existed.  Some better rulings migt help.

From the rules:

506.1. The combat phase has five steps, which proceed in order: beginning of combat, declare attackers, declare blockers, combat damage, and end of combat. The declare blockers and combat damage steps are skipped if no creatures are declared as attackers or put onto the battlefield attacking (see rule 508.4). There are two combat damage steps if any attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike (see rule 702.4).

I have a friend that has been around magic almost as long as I have and he is nowhere near as deep into the rules as I am so when I have to teach him why something does something he gets pissed.

My wife tells me to let him have his way but I tell her it is important to protect the integrity of the game... It isn't about me being right or him being right, it's about the game being right.
Well put. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who has that "one friend" that demands to see the rules when I try to explain something. The arguments are actually pretty entertaining at times BUT
I believe OP is resolved?

I had that one, what's the one that says both players must pass priority in between steps and phases?

I believe this is what you are looking for

500.2.: A phase or step in which players receive priority ends when the stack is empty and all players pass in succession. Simply having the stack become empty doesn't cause such a phase or step to end; all players have to pass in succession with the stack empty. Because of this, each player gets a chance to add new things to the stack before that phase or step ends.

I'm wondering how he has a show and tell deck if he doesn't even know the basic rules of the game.

MuggyWuggy

Although you can spend all the money you want on an amazing deck, it does not come with instructions for l337ness ;)

Who needs to pay for cards?

People who actually want to play the game. ;-)
