Don't expect it to happen after the first try. You'll likely need to give it a few goes before its ready for silver dye.

I've seen some posts saying to bleach your hair beforehand, then dye it violet for a silver color.

This will work but make sure your hair is very bleached, practically white. Some people hair that is naturally resistant to bleach and it comes out an orange color, if you put violet on top of that it will be really violet.
