Say you have a 2/2 with double strike and life link do you gain 4 life or just 2

Anoobass

Depends on the situation.  If your creature is blocked by a 2/2 vanilla (no abilities), your creature will deal 2 damage in first strike to the opponent's and their creature will die before regular combat.  This means you will deal 0 damage during regular combat.  If your creature is unblocked, you will gain 4, assuming they don't die from the first 2 damage.

Ok that's kinda what I was thinking thank you for confirming

I've always thought that once enough lethal damage was dealt in the first hit, the regular combat damage would be counted as a trigger to gain life.

Is this a Fabled Hero with lifelink we're talking about?

sorry to bother, for example if directed to opponent, double strike means double damage?

and how bout in commander format? x4 damage?

I think that you think that the 21 commander damage clause is because commanders deal 2x damage and they just simplified it or something, but commanders still deal 1x damage, but they only need to deal 21 points of it.

If directed at the opponent, you deal the first strike damage and the second normal damage. So yes, double damage.

You do not deal x4 damage in commander, that would be very op.

Back to the OP's question, if you read the FAQ link regarding lifelink, it states any damage dealt by a creature gains life equal to the damage.

Therefore when fabled hero applies first strike damage you gain 2 life. When he does normal combat damage you gain 2 more life. So it'd be 4 life gained.

I think you're all over-complicating this :P let me put it all in one post.

Lifelink means that damage dealt by that creature also causes you to gain that much life.

Double Strike means the creature deals combat damage both during the first strike damage phase and normal damage phase.

If a creature with both abilities attacks and is not blocked, it will deal damage twice to the defending player and gain life both times.
(Ex. A 2/2 attacks with both lifelink and double strike. No blocks are declared. The 2/2 deals 2 damage during first strike and 2 lifelink is gained. The 2/2 then deals another 2 damage during normal combat damage phase and another 2 lifelink is gained. This makes a total of 4 damage dealt and 4 life gained.)

If the creature with the abilities attacks and is blocked by a creature that is tough enough to live through the first strike, you will get the same effect. (Although the blocking creature gets to hit your attacker back during normal damage phase)

If the attacking creature kills the blocking creature with the first strike damage, the second swing has nothing to hit and no damage will be dealt or life gained.
(Ex. Your 2/2 double strike lifelink is blocked by a 2/2. First strike damage phase, your 2/2 deals 2 damage and you link 2 life. The blocking creature dies and is put in the graveyard. Normal combat damage phase comes and there is no blocker left to hit. No damage is dealt. You only gain the the 2 life from the first strike.)

4. Even though it only has one toughness, your 4/4 still crushes it in the face for 4 damage at once before it dies.
