Soul Conduit

Ok today me and a friend were playing an he had out a {Soul Conduit} so i figured i need to hit him in one attack to win. In which i did. Well over 20 damage (64 to be exact). He wanted to take all the damage and in response to taking damage switch it to me.

Can i get a specific ruling? I said he died befote he could respond to anything.

If he activates it before damage, you'll switch life totals first an then he'll take 64 damage. If he tries activate it after damage he'll already be dead when the state is checked, before he can activate it.

There is no time where he can be at a life of zero or less and use the conduit before the state is checked. Not without {Platinum Angel} or something.
