There were lots of great comments on my previous post, thanks guys.  And I have been thinking about how I have been playing magic, and maybe it is time for a change in perspective.

I always have a lot of decks.  Right now I have about 7 standard decks. I like playing casually and at FNMs and I like the variety. If playing around the kitchen table then I want to switch it up every few games. I think this has lead me to build several mediocre decks with some really good cards in them. The problem is, once cards go into a deck they stay there.

I think I need to think more modularly (maybe not a word, but it should be).  I could start organizing my cards outside of decks in a communal pool and pull the cards as I need them for decks. This way my best cards are better utilized in a variety of decks. I think I would also get more value out of the cards I have.

Another idea is to build one really good deck. I would use my others as trade bait to get the cards I need. This could be a slow tedious process, and I could be waiting for those 2 or 3 cards to complete my deck.

I have also thought about asking the LGS to consider side events in other formats: pauper, commander, modern... Giving players another start or brewing different decks could help with variety.

So, what is your opinion?  What would be the best way to maximize my playing and improving my game?

Well put. +1

I highly recommend starting by watching the scg coverage today on twitch. There are not only some regular teir decks but quite a few new ideas doing well. The announcers are covering the decks quite well an could be a great way to kick start a competitive thought process or at least a new look a building in terms of prioritizing based on the meta. Then once you get thinking get brewing and never stop looking for chances to learn.

I wish my LGS did more... I honestly would recommend trying to get into every format (barring Legacy and Vintage because of the price). It allows you to utilize almost all of your cards, have a lot variety and fully appreciate all of what Magic has to offer.

Great idea. Can you post a link to the coverage you are talking about?  I am going to search for it now. Thanks.

I found the video you were talking about.  I am also checking out SCG for deck ideas.

My problem now seems to be deciding which direction I should go.

Mono colored seems boring to me.

I like playing B/U, but do I put in a third color?

This isn't ravnica block and we dont have check lands ({isolated chapel}) any more so three colors is inconsistent at best. Focus one color splash another that best fills in what your deck is missing and thats the basic formula for building lately.

Solid advice. May start with white splashing blue.
