Yes. His ability does not say "target," and so is not affected by hexproof or shroud.

This is true, however, the Shield mate only prevents damage that would be dealt to you, he does not prevent damage dealt to creatures.

So after casting, he is a fixed upkeep of two white and then {W} ignores whatever you want for your life total... Very very nice

I'm making {Eight-and-a-Half-Tails} in EDH. Seems handy.
