MuggyWuggy

Block with hoplite
Response?

Ieatfood7

A 2/2 blocked by a 1/2, right?  Pass priority. Combat resolves and yours dies?

MuggyWuggy

Before damage is dealt I tap plains for{gods willing}
Red

Hoplite gets +1/+1 counter now a 2/3

All damage is prevented to him this turn

Cackler dies

Ieatfood7

In response and before the heroic or the spell resolves, {magma jet} to kill it. Scry two. Ship them both. Pass.

20/4

MuggyWuggy

It doesn't kill him

I've targeted him with a spell as I cast it

Heroic triggers

Spell doesn't have to resolve

You just wasted magma jet :)

Ieatfood7

You are incorrect. A player can respond to a triggered ability. Heroic is a triggered ability. Your guy dies while heroic (and gods willing) is still on the stack.

I can find the relevant rules if you need me to quote them.

Edit: Your right that the spell doesn't have to resolve when you cast the spell you put the spell on the stack. Then you put the heroic above it on the stack. You can counter the spell {counter spell} and heroic still works. You can counter heroic {stifle} and the spell still works. Or you can kill the creature and neither will work as there is no target.

MuggyWuggy

I just went over a instance like this recently

Heroic is whenever you cast a spell that targets

Therefore I've selected to cast a spell targeting

Heroic triggers

Your response is here.

Gods willing hasn't resolved but heroic has triggered

Ieatfood7

Yes. Heroic triggered. Triggered and resolved are not the same thing. I responded to the heroic trigger before the heroic resolved.
