HTML coding

I'm currently in a web design class in high school and was wondering if anyone who is savvy with this kind of thing has any tips for website building?
I do not use Flash or other such programs (school can't afford them)
I build them by going into notepad and working all of the coding myself then saving it as an .HTML

Have a plan of what you will do before you do it! And experiment with what looks good and what looks better. I only know a little of HTML and Python, so I can't really help you With any coding.
