Target vs. Retroactive Protection

Ok let's say opponent has {mother of runes} on the BF untapped and unaffected by summoning sickness.  Now I play {jace the mind sculptor} and use his -1 ability to return an opponents creature to their hand.  Can they respond by giving their creature pro blue with the mother or would it be too late since targeting is done when you announce using an ability or casting a spell?

I ran across this in DotP 2012.  I used {captivating vampire} to steal an opponents creature and he responded with {stave off} to give it pro black and it still let me have his creature.

I ran across this in DotP 2012.  I used {captivating vampire} to steal an opponents creature and he responded with {stave off} to give it pro black and it still let me have his creature.

DotP is broken. For most abilities, if the target would be an illegal target when the spell resolves, you counter the ability/spell. PW may work differently.

DotP is just silly sometimes. Once my friend and I were in a 2HG match and I was using the knight that gain pro from any color for WW. I had been using it to hold off a 60/60 {Ajani's Pridemate}. Our opponent tried to {Path to Exile} it, in response I gave him pro white. The card resolved and the idiots across the mic tried convincing me they were Magic gods :l
