Needing to make an account elsewhere to have an avatar here was kind of off-putting. Is there a particilar reason we use gravatar? (This is more a question for piotr if he sees it or a mod if they know)

Wordpress also uses Gravatar.

It's intended to be a single account for use across the internet to provide consistency. I think it kinda died when sites started integrating Facebook for the same purpose.
