Phantasmal Image

Say I cast {Phantasmal Image} targeting an opponent's creature. In response they {Unsummon} it. Does the {Phantasmal Image} "fizzle" or still enter as a copy? The wording on the card has me confused about the rules.

I believe it would still enter as a copy, once it hits the battlefield and you pass priority he can target it with the unsummon.  Then because it is a phantasm, it will be sacrificed.

Phantasmal image doesn't target a creature when summoned, so the choice is made when the spell resolves. Your opponent is still free to unsummon a creature in response to the spell and prevent you from choosing that creature.

Again, the image doesn't target. If it did target, the image would use the last known values of the creature while it was on the battlefield.

Okay just going to clarify.

{phantasmal image} does not target and therefore can get around things such as protection, hex proof, and shroud.

The choice is made when it enters the battlefield and does not use the stack to do so.

Your opponent may unsummon a creature they would not like copied but that must be done before image resolves and does not prevent a different choice.

If nothing else is on the field upon resolution image enters as a 0/0 blue illusion called phantasmal image and goes to the graveyard as a state based action
