A friend asked this question a while back but I never got to answer it or ask it on here.

Situation:
Player A has a {Gideon, Champion of Justice} on the battlefield with 20 loyalty.  During main phase 1, he uses the 0 ability to turn him into a 20/20 indestructible, pro damage, etc... During combat he declares Gideon as an attacker and attacks Player B.

Player B chooses to block with a {Blightsteel Colossus}.  Before damage is dealt, Player B casts {Skullcrack} on Player A.  Now that damage cannot be prevented Gideon will be dealt 11 infect damage.

Here is the question.  Will blightsteel only do the damage to his power toughness making Gideon a 20 loyalty PW with 11 -1/-1 counters?  Will it only do the damage only to his loyalty, making him a 9 loyalty PW?  Or will it do both, dealing damage to the creature half dealing 11 -1/-1 counters as well as taking 11 counters off his PW half effectively doubling the damage?

702.89c: Damage dealt to a creature by a source with infect isn't marked on that creature. Rather, it causes that many -1/-1 counters to be put on that creature. See rule 119.3.

Because the damage isn't marked on him, he gets to keep the loyalty counters and gains an additional 11 -1/-1 counters.

I'm unsure wether a PW turned creature loses loyalty when taking damage.

That's the thing though, he shouldn't, which is why I couldn't answer the question.  Technically any PW that is dealt damage (even in the form of infect) will remove loyalty instead.

Pleeb

306.8.: Damage dealt to a planeswalker results in that many loyalty counters being removed from it.

Ok, so damage to a creature PW does cause loss of loyalty.

Next part. Infect is a replacement effect for damage. Because the damage never happened, no loyalty is lost.

Anoobass

But a creature with infect "deals damage in the form of -1/-1 counters"

Neat find. Both loyalty counters and -1/-1 infect counters would remain on Gideon but due to the way infect works, I don't think any loyalty would be removed at all.

Anoobass

So would infect ever kill a PW?

If Gideon becomes a creature with -1/-1 counters equal to or more than the number of loyalty counters, it would go to the gy as a state based action.  Unless they make some rule or there's one I'm unaware of, that's how I'd read it.

So to answer your question, no, I don't think infect can kill planeswalkers. But it sounds wrong when I say it lol

weird. if you google infect planswewalker its the third link, first tapped out.

man another site says he would get -1/-1 counters and lose loyalty. gotta ask my local judge tomorrow.

Double-O-Scotch

Sooo, that's why it sounded wrong. Lol cause it was. Yay learning.

Anoobass

I figured it would be that but idk

I agree. This post needs a gorzeyeto punch to the package. Can someone resolve this so my brain stops hurting? I've looked online and some posts say one thing, some say another. My reality needs clarification please...
