If I have a nightmare with lifelink and it has 9/9 and I attack they block with a 1/1 do I gain 1 life or 9 life

ty my friend was tellin me I only got 1 because after he did 1 damage he can't go in the negative I told him I played on x box live and they gave me whatever attack I had in life

Here's the relevant rule if you're interested:

510.1c: ... If exactly one creature is blocking it, it assigns all its combat damage to that creature. ... An amount of damage that's greater than a creature's lethal damage may be assigned to it.
