title says it all, lets say I have a {fabled hero} in play and I enchant it with an aura....  does that count as the hero being targeted?  hence giving it its heroic +1+1

Absolutely! Auras always target:

114.1b: Aura spells are always targeted. These are the only permanent spells with targets. An Aura's target is specified by its enchant keyword ability (see rule 702.5, "Enchant"). The target(s) are chosen as the spell is cast; see rule 601.2c. An Aura permanent doesn't target anything; only the spell is targeted. (An activated or triggered ability of an Aura permanent can also be targeted.)

Also worth noting that it's auras, not regular enchantments, that target. So those could still be applicable to things that have protection against certain traits found in regular enchantments
Ex.: Why  {Tempered Steel} still works on a metalcrafted  {Etched Champion}

...I think

Aura's don't ALWAYS target. An Aura that is not cast (i.e. comes back from the graveyard or from an {Oblivion Ring}) does NOT target. This is what allows you to cheat Aura's onto creatures with Shroud/Hexproof.

Some enchantments target. {Oblivion Ring} is not an aura, but an enchantment. Which your Champion would be protected from. But you're right. In the case of Tempered Steel, they don't target.

What are you guys using the word aura to describe?
Generic enchantments?

{Ethereal Armor} is an Aura. Anything with type Enchantment - Aura.

If the hexproof is yours you can target it. Auras and protection is odd though. I can enchant an {etched champion} with anything but once he gets metalcraft all colored auras fall off, and I can no longer enchant him. Does that make sense?

MementoMori

Shroud != protection.

Shroud prevents only targeting. Protection prevents more than that, but only from things with certain properties (unless your name is {Progenitus}).

Auras fall off a creature with protection from one of their properties not because of the "can't be targeted" part of protection but the "can't be enchanted" part. An {Etched Champion} with metalcraft active can still be enchanted with {Eldrazi Conscription}.
