Lifelink with blockers

So say a {vampire nighthawk} attacks and is blocked by 3 1/1's. would you gain 6 life cause it damaged each creature or only the initial 2?

I believe you gain life based off blockers toughness so you should gain 2 since your only capable of 2 max

You will only gain two life. You can choose which of the creatures receives any, or all, of the damage that can be given by the {vampire nighthawk} but at the end of combat you will have only dealt two damage and only gained two life.

When he blocks with the three 1/1s you chose what creatures you assign combat damage to, you could assign one damage two two of the three but one of his 1/1s will survive cause ou can only deal a total of 2 damage amount his three creatures.

Well rules wise it said so: 

702.14b: Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that source's controller, or its owner if it has no controller, to gain that much life (in addition to any other results that damage causes). See rule 119.3.

Since it can only deal 2 damage, you gain two life.
