Venturing into modern

I've decided that getting into modern would be worth a try. Does anyone have suggestions for cheap (not necessarily RDW standard cheap) modern builds for a beginner. I don't have anything except shock and check land and just about a playset of every standard card.

Living end isn't super expensive outside of {Fulminator Mage} and maybe one set of fetches ({Verdant Catacombs}). Infect can also be very inexpensive. There's also affinity, but I'm not a huge fan of it.
