I have {Phrexian unlife}. I'm at 0 life and 8 posion counters. My opponent is at 5. I play {rage extraxtor}, paying two life. Can I do that? Am I dead? Can I pay life if I have no life to pay?

That's right, you can't pay with something you don't have. Phyrexians dont accept credit.

The reason that you can't use phyrexian mana with less than 2 life is that phyrexian mana doesn't deal damage to you; you give life. If the rule for phyrexian mana were something like this:

{Can be paid for with 1 (B), or <card name> deals 2 damage to you}

...then you could still use phyrexian mana at less than 2 life. It would be just like a creature dealing 2 damage to you.

By the way, even if it were like that, it would be unwise to use phyrexian mana when you have 8 poison counters!
