Opinions on Serra ascendant

I'm really interested to hear what people's opinion on {Serra ascendant} is this card in my opinion only really has a place in major life gain decks or edh/commander format yet I have friends who think its 1 mana cost is way to op

It's a pretty solid card in EDH, IF you can get it out early. Otherwise, its simply a conditional 6/6 flyer with lifelink, that dies to any form of removal. Not to mention, EDH is a format where big creatures run rampant, so its 1 mana cost is a bargain early game, but late game I'd rather have a removal or utility spell than this guy.

Either way, its a good card. I just think some people overestimate it a bit.
