Double strike

Just a quick question on double strike. Say I have a 5/5 double strike hydra. I attack with my hydra and a 2/2 soldier blocks the hydra. That's 10 points of damage that the hydra is goin to deal. Does the soldier absorb all 10 points or does it absorb 5 and the other 5 dealt to opponent?

MisterJH

If the double striker does not have trample, all 10 will be absorbed. What happens is, when blocked the 5 first strike damage and 5 regular combat damage are set to hit the soldier. When the soldier dies from first strike damage, the regular combat damage has no place to go, and basically, for all practical purposes, fizzles

{Savageborn Hydra} I assume would deal all it damage to the creature. Now, if the hydra had TRAMPLE, it would deal lethal damage to the creature (2) and would deal the other (8) to your opponent.

I meant 8, not that face

Thanks I was thinking of it as a person holdin two swords. One sword killed the soldier and the other sword struck the opponent. But I guess that can only happen with trample. I thought on mtgo I saw it happen that way.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I thought it worked out this way. The hydra would deal 5 first strike damage which would make 2 leathal to the solider and only 3 to the persons face and then in norms damage step, the hydra has nothing to attack right? I just want to make sure I am not right lol

If you meant the hydra has 5/5 with trample and double strike, the first strike kills the 2/2 and 3 damage goes through. The second strike has no toughness to absorb (creature is dead) so trample enables the second strike's 5 damage to go past, bringing a total of 8 damage to smack on the defending player's face.

Dragonjr

Oh okay I wasn't sure that's how that worked I thought there would be no creature for the normal damage to even hit so the normal damage disappeared. Thanks for clearing that up for me :)

It would if there isn't trample.

I love trample :D

Let's say I have a 2/2 wurm with first strike and trample. If I swing and the defending player blocks with another 2/2, would the defending 2/2 die and my wurm would survive because of first strike?

Assuming the blocking 2/2 doesn't have first or double strike, yep!
