Mostly singles. Sometimes I get a fat pack or a deck builders toolkit. And of course I buy prebuilt decks. I know the last one isnt the best option, though it helps me fill in holes in my decks until I gets better options.

I spend money on cards at prerelease and my team buys at least one box. Aside from those sealed events I trade and earn creadit by performing well at fnm to get the rest of what I might need.

Can you teach me to do well at FNM? :( I'm the suck.

Kaleo helps a lot of people. Basically if you're willing to contribute the effort to trade for the cards and the money to get started you just need to pick one deck and go for it. I built my esper control after looking up a net deck, adjusting it and now I top 8 every FNM. If suggest something like reanimator. It's a ton of fun to play and it wins. Look at will craddocks list on star city games for Kansas City. He's a friend of mine and plays at my local store all the time. That would be a great place to start.
This true. I help when I can (busy life). Net decking then modifying the idea to make it your own or due to budget is a good place to start. However depending on your local meta sometimes this backfires because they are prepared for those decks. I recommend reading and watching everything you can find by Patrick Chapin and then do it again once you have a better grasp of the game.

I usually buy a fat pack and do pre release stuff.
I've stopped buying boosters, although I sometimes get randomly sucked in.
eBay or other online stores for singles is where I do my bulk shopping. Sometimes I'll split a box with a mate tho when a new set comes out. I will often help out others with stuff they need, especially if I have more than a playset, donating cards is not out of the question.
Doing well at Fnm is also a great way to bolster a collection.
I also usually buy the dual decks and the other feature decks (like the planechase ones)
Event decks are a great way to start a really competitive deck. Usually you can adjust them quite easily to make the deck even stronger.i try to avoid the intro decks as they need a lot more work to fix.

It seems that mtg is a never ending sink hole where money can disappear into.
My advice is to budget it out, do it smart (like the common & uncommon purchase) and you will find you have all the cards you want without spending stupid amounts.

Most of all though. Enjoy it! :)

Prereleases are pretty good deals, get boosters, play matches, get a promo, and have a chance to win some packs.

Dmreiss

I forgot about prereleases. Those are always a good time, an you get to play cards before they are legal.  First prerelease I ever went to was for Tempest.

whitedrake

Lately I spend quite a lot of money on cards... Last two months it was more than 500 $ each month...

If I'm on the road I will stop by a store and seek out some random singles. I don't think I'll invest too much after I finish my 4th edh deck. Unless its dragons or trolls

darkshanx

I don't buy them enough
I'm only 16 no job and 18 exams to deal with. So fun times :D

Bozo_Law

Singles every once and a while and drafts. That is pretty much it.

AgrusKos

I get fat packs every so often, like once every 3 months, sometimes I buy packs, and I only get singles if I need something and no one has them for trade

Barzini

I only buy singles on ebay, depends if i see a low bid or not.  Online stores are much more expensive.

Gorzo

I draft almost every Friday at fnm, which is essentially buying 3 boosters. Other than that, I spend no money until I get close to finishing an EDH deck, when I break down and splurge on a singles-buying spree to complete the deck. I try not to spend much, as money is pretty tight for me.

Malachiracer

I usually get a deck builders toolkit every 3 months and about 2 boosters a week
I only just started buying singles

Dudecore

My playgroup usually buys a box a piece, we trade a lot through that method.
