Me and some buddies got into a debate regarding hexproof creatures. I'm somewhat new to Magic so I defered to his knowledge. I would like to know this. How is it death touch affects hexproof if it can't be targeted by abilities/sorcery the opponent(s) control?

Hmm well lets see.
Deathtouch as it pertains to combat damage, doesn't care about hex proof as combat doesn't target. So if your opponents hex proof creature blocks your death touch creature, it's dead, regardless of power or toughness as long as your creature deals at least 1,
Death touch as it pertains to non combat damage, it's almost all cases, targets creature, thus being unable to target the hex proof creature.

Ok that makes more sense than what I was told. Also, how is it a board whipeing type can destroy hexproof?

Ah well, a traditional board wipe such as  {Wrath of God} says to "Destroy all creatures. They can't be regenerated"
As you can see, no targeting is happening there. Just says all creatures are dead. Most board wipes are like this.
There are also some cards that will target a player, forcing them to sacrifice a creature. If all they have is their {Geist of Saint Traft}, well guess what, he's gone!

I understand he is not being directly targeted. But in a way is being targeted. So it being in the opponents control doesn't matter?

Ok stop thinking that way. There is no "in a way..." When it comes to the rules.
To be targeted, the spell actually has the word "target".

{Wrath of god} can kill {Invisible Stalker}
{Murder} can't.

The difference is the word target

Magic is a very literal game for the most part. Its quite nice actually.

> implying deathtouch targets creatures

Don't feel bad, my girlfriend blocked my first strike  {Porcelain Legionnaire} against her {Vampire Nighthawk} and thought since my  {Porcelain Legionnaire} touched her nighthawk, she thought it would die. I refused to play with her until she thought about what she just said.

Keyeto put a lot of effort into addressing Hexproof in the Frequently Asked Questions portion of "Rules Q&A and FAQ". It's worth a read.
