Situation: my opponent attacks me with a {volcanic dragon} enchanted with {firebreathing}. I have an {kjeldoran royal guard} enchanted with {spirit mantle} on the BF.

I do not block.

He taps 6 mountains for the {firebreathing}.

I tap {kjeldoran royal guard} to redirect the damage.

My opponent claims that since {kjeldoran royal guard}  has protection from creatures, I can not redirect the damage to {kjeldoran royal guard}.

How should this play out?

It doesnt make it the "target" of the damage, it simply takes damage meant for you. The redirect can happen but since the source is a creature the damage will not affect your creature. Nice combo
