Maximum Hand Size Question

If you have the ability to play a card, do you have to if otherwise you would discard a card because your maximum hand size is breached?

Nope. You don't have to play a card you can choose to discard.

If I have a {Gnat Miser} and my opponent has a {Spellbook} out, is his maximum hand size six?

I'm asking because I saw one of the rules says something along the lines of "If two abilities contradict each other, the negation wins" so I'm guessing the answer is yes.

Maximum hand size is only check once at the end of your turn. At any other time you can have any number of cards

Well, it depends on which came into play first, but one says "your hand size is reduced by one" an the other says "you have no max". So infinity minus one is still infinity. You still have no max hand size.

I was wrong.  I know, hard to believe, but it was bound to happen sometime. 

{Spell Book} Rulings:
   If multiple effects modify your hand size, apply them in timestamp order. For example, if you put Null Profusion (an enchantment that says your maximum hand size is two) onto the battlefield and then put Spellbook onto the battlefield, you'll have no maximum hand size. However, if those permanents entered the battlefield in the opposite order, your maximum hand size would be two.

No I believe you are still correct in the OP's case.
Infinity less 1 is still infinity.
If it was an absolute number (say, max hand size is 1) then that would be the case, as it was the later modifier in both cases.
