Card Value

I seem to have trouble analyzing card value. Cards that seem very valuable and useful to me seem to be shunned by the community. others that I see as junk are hailed. tell me, where have I gone wrong?

To some extent people know what things tend to run well and what cards arent good in certain formats due to speed and usefulness. There are always exceptions to that where people see no value in a card until one person finds a way to abuse it. Happens all the time. It depends on your strategy and if its working for you. If its not working well maybe they are right. If it is working then its irrelevant what they think.

That's where you come in and make that card useful ;)

I do that sometimes too though.  Example: {Deathrite Shaman}.  I totally understand that it's good, but it is so praised as an amazing card that'll jump in price later on and I just don't understand what is so over-the-top about this card.  It's good, no doubt, but I don't know why it is so good.

I somewhat agree. It really shines in dredge/reanimator. You know, decks that have a beefy graveyard by T2 and can help deathrite start doing some work. Other than that, I don't see its utility applied to other decks.

Also, see {thragtusk} for a perfect example of a card coming out of left field with its usefulness.

Alright, how about something like  {Tree of Redemption}? To me, it seems like a very versatile defender with good game turning abilities. Beef it up, give it deathtouch, you know! But I never see any talk/use of it

By turn four, they'll have flyers, and killspells. Plus, they'll probably have other ways to win (than attacking) with Boros Charms and stuff.

On t4 you are most likely winning or setting up and the tree is not a win card but an aid in a much longer setup

If a card can 2 for 1, provide card advantage,  or mana advantage

That's a lot to take in. Whenever I build a deck it's usually just things that I think work well together, and it seems to go well for me. Can I get some critique on my artifact deck when I post it later on today?

That being said, toughness is generally cheaper than power. Ex. {elite vanguard} is a 2/1 for {W} while {steel wall} is 0/4 for {1}. Also, higher rarity generally means lower costs along that curve, like {memnite} is uncommon and free.

Ghetto Pass

A good safe bet in my experience, as far as monitory value goes, is lands.  Specifically rare and mythic lands; these cards almost never go down on value and are so versital they're always in demand.

This. Basically, good cards with mana-related abilities are always relevant. See {Noble Hierarch} or {Cavern of Souls}.
