I think what he meant was you don't make you're $$$ back if you don't sell them for monetary gain. Which hardly anyone does. Meaning you have these good cards that you keep or trade for other good cards, and you're still out a C note.

Lol I do that.  I'll pull something awesome (very rare) and think "Woah, profit!" then realize I'm still out 4 bucks because I'll prolly never sell it 

Hahah I know how you feel. I used to sell high value cards on eBay but its such a hassle if youre a new seller. So I just stick to trading.

We pay ~50% more for a booster box in Australia... Much harder to profit from a box.
