I realized I should have posted this in the help thread, but I couldn't figure out any way to exit the post creation, so here I am.
I've recently learned about EDH and heard from many that EDH decks are among the best out there; naturally I'm interested in creating one. problem is, I have no idea where to begin. What would be a good choice for my general, and cards that would help to balance out a deck so large?

update: I guess I AM in help thread. I thought I was in general. no worries

First, a few things that will help you decide on an EDH deck.

1) Do you want to play for fun, or to win
2) How is your playgroup, and how do they react to certain decks
3) Pick some colors!

Once these are decided, it'll be a lot easier to find a good general for your deck. Find these out and try to find a general that meets your conditions. If you can't decide between some, we'll gladly help, but EDH is supposed to be a more personal kind of format, where you can let your creativity do the deck making.

And for future reference, we like to keep the Help section for app related questions. Any deck making questions should go in their respective format sections.

There are so many different ways you can go with EDH that it really depends on your play style. What colors do you like to play? Do you enjoy control, aggressive, mid-range, combo? Do you like to do your own thing, and tend not to care about what your opponents are doing, or do you take priority in altering/limiting what your opponents can do? Each of these strategies have great cards and potential generals to complement them. And then there's the silly path, picking the strange and unexpected general like {Norin the Wary} or {Pheldagriff}.

it's moved now, hehe. I generally always play for fun. I've never played in tournaments, but plan to someday. that said, to some extent I still play to win, as most would. as of now I do not have many cards at all, roughly 250. with such a small selection, do I even have sufficient resources to build a functional EDH?

That's going to depend on the color(s) of your deck, and your general. To be honest, if you're anything like most EDH players I know (myself included) you're deck is going to change 1000 times, just because of how many builds you can have with one deck! You're collection will likely expand in the process of building. But what you need to figure out first, is the deck you're gonna play. I suggest picking a color scheme to start with.

I was thinking of starting one with Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran seeing as it is one of my few legendary creatures at the moment. Perhaps Myojiin of Cleansing Fire?

Keyeto

{Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran} would be a good place to start!

ok! I enjoy the firs strike setting of boros from the first ravnica set. do you suppose that would translate well into a full EDH?

I choose based on generals I like, but money is not a huge obstacle for me. Sometimes it is better to simply look at your cards and decide where you are the strongest. Then pick out a general based on the support you have.

Check out mtg gatherer. It makes it easy to search generals(legendary creatures).

Also as mentioned above it is good to know your playgroup. For example my group really hates  {Mind Control} and similar card types, so I attempt to avoid them. Remember the game is supposed to be fun, and not over in two or three turns. Heck one guy in my playgroup now is attempting to build a deck with like 5 or less creatures. His goal is simply to win without ever attacking with creatures.

Basically there are so many aspects to this game style which is what makes it fun.

GateCrash isn't released until Friday so that's no surprise ;)

But if you're looking at red/white aggression you have lots of good cards to pick from. {Gisela, blade of Goldnight} is another possible general, and at the very least a good card for the deck. You also have stuff like...

{Furnace of Rath}
{Gratuitous Violence}
{Curse of Bloodletting}
{Avatar of Slaughter}
{True Conviction}
{Sun Titan}
{Inferno Titan}
{Mother of Runes}

Just to get you started. And there are a bajillion boros cards in GateCrash for you.

Wow, Gisela would be an ideal general for me. my red/white deck (loosely based on boros cards) has gotten me through some tough times, and I'd love to have that, though I'd assume I'd have a hell of a time finding it. guess I'm gonna be blowing money on Avacyn boosters...

{Gisela, Blade of Goldnight} is the type of general that gets tucked ({Spell Crumple}, {Hinder}) or gets destroyed quickly.

Some commanders draw the ire of the table.
