The requirements needed in order to give negative karma was recently lowered. A lot. More people have access to doing so than before - some are not so forgiving it would seem. And the increased number of people using this new power means one really bad post can land you a huge number of -karma hits, when before it got you only a couple from the fewer folks who had the ability to do so.
