Has anyone else thought of this?

If you use a populate card on {precursor golem} wouldn't you double your tokens each time?
PS: I know that {rite of replication} is better I just like that there are a lot of useful populate cards and they are at common/uncommon rarity

{rootborn defenses}

Doesn't look like populate technically targets, so precursor golem won't trigger off of it.

I agree, I believe it would be the same as proliferate, where you just 'add another counter' and it doesn't have to target. :)

Kaleo42

{sundering growth} them for fun or do it with indestructable or shroud available

Quackmaster5

What would happen if you {cackling counterpart} the {precursor golem} and then populated. Would the effect then create a chain reaction of tokens?

Populate wouldnt work at all it has the same wording as a copy creature like clone or pheryxian metamorph it just says you make a copy of the token doesnt say make a copy of "target" token. Now if you cackling counterpart it you could populate the token and get another 2 golems everytime you populate bc it says when it enters battlefield.

You could also put deadeye navigator paired and make him enter play a bunch of times creating a lot of extra golems then use cackling counterpart make that many copies then rites of replicate them and make 5x more. So say you do the deadeye pair and make the golem exile and return 6 times thats 15 golems then cackling counterpart it thats 30 golems then rite it with the kicker thats 90 golems

MarduArrow

Your math is a little off, cackling counterpart would make a copy of each golem making you have 30 golems, however, one of those copies would be of the original golem causing an additional 2 golem tokens when it enters the battlefield so 32 golems, due to the original golem's ability rite of replication would target all 32 golems 32*5= 160 but you have 2 of the original golem so when they get copied 5 times each for a total of 10 you get 2 tokens when each etb total of 20 160+20=180

Actually our math was way off ok 1 plus the 2 then {deadeye navigator} 6 times adds 12 more so 15 then cackling counterpart becomes 32 then {rites of replicate} adds another 180 plus the original 32 it copied is 212 then {snapcaster mage} it for 24 of the original golem and 900 of the tokens then add all together plus the 48 new tokens with a grand total of 1184 golems

Yea i think i just won unless you have a day like card unless i got a {darksteel forge} out

MarduArrow

Not to mention if you have a few  {Parallel Lives} or  {Doubling Season}s on the field

With both from the beginning 5608.

And you can do this all with blue and a green opponent with the cards. Just copy enchantment and steal enchantment.

Gorzo

Not to be "that guy" but one {lightning bolt}, {unsummon}, or {doom blade} and all of those golems are dead no matter how many you make. It's a fun combo but precursor golem is very vulnerable to removal, so be careful using it as your win con.

Erzengel

Darksteel forge takes care of that all of them are artifacts

I've once {Sword to Plowshere} my 2HG partner's golems after they were targeted by a {Lightning Bolt}. Jumped up from 20 sonething up to the 300s. Would had won the game sooner had I not played {Silent Arbiter} during that game ;D

Greg54js

Okay so I just ordered the pieces for this deck.. Looks so sweet :D thanks for the idea
