Magus of the disk

I had been playing with my friend whom knows far more about magic than me, as I was about to play magus of the disk ability (1 + tap creature: destroy all artifacts, enchantments, and creatures) he said that I couldn't use the ability because there were no artifacts in play. He said to use the ability I would have to have all of those things in play because it says "and" not "or." is this true or is he pulling a fast one on me? Thanks

Yes your friend is wrong. This ability doesn't target. If it said "destroy target artifact" Then there would have to be one in play. This states ALL. So if there are no artifacts in play then the state will check for all three of these types of cards and if ANY are on the battlefield it will destroy them.

However if it said "Destroy target artifact, enchantment or creature" then you pick which to destroy.

Isn't there also a green card that says "destroy one of each permanent" in more words than that but it's the same principle. The "all" clause is a board wipe. Doesn't matter if you're only trying to kill 5 enchantments and no creatures are out, the ability still resolves.
