So tomorrow I'm going to my first fnm. I'm wondering what to expect. Do they give out prizes and what is the usual?
How many matches do I play?
And most importantly do I take my burning vengence deck or my werewolves deck?
(Which is better agaisnt the metta)
[metta=delver] :P
Anyway if you guys could help me that would be great.
Thanks
Thorn
Vengence also has {Rolling Temblor} for {Geist of St. Lalala}
Rounds are determined by how many people show up to play.
Usually, unless it's a box tourney, the priZes are for top 8. Usually packs but it depends on the store. Also, depending on the store, top 3 will get promos for July.
Know these rules.
Always present your deck for your opponent to cut every time you shuffle.
Use a die rule to decide who gets to pick who is going first. DO NOT ROLE A COUNT DOWN DIE.
Whoevers turn it is has priority, you can not cast anything unless they change phases, activate an ability, draw a card, or cast something. Dont let people just do things on your turn, they have to respond to something.
All cards in your library must be facing the same direction and not have visable marks of any kind.
Players may look at their sideboard at any time, but can not handle any other cards while doing so.
Double check your sideboard every time before you present your deck to your opponent.
Have a decklist on you, but dont look at it unless someone is being a jerk and claiming you modified your deck for that match.
Remember to be polite, introduce yourself, and double check you have the right opponent.
Keep track of the number of cards in your opponents hand, and use paper to track life so you have a record.
Remeber mana empties on phase change, and know the rules for your cards (read all the rulings for your deck).
Lastly have fun! I realize most of this wont be a big deal, but i garuntee players enjoy the game more when both players know and abide by the rules.
Oh almost forgot, whoever is going first decides wrether to keep their hand or not first.

Lol I would love to know where you got these rules from.
"All cards must be facing the same way" is common curtesy?

When my crew went salt lake for the GP we spent hours of the drive going over rules and rulings to make sure no dicks took advantage of how new we were to that level of competition, since then ive become aware of how many people violate the basic rules of gameplay (mainly priority) both accendently and maliciously. I realize at fnm this is rare, but that doesnt mean it cant happen, and we all should be aiding the new players to make sure certain people dont make an "easy win" out of them just because of some rules.

Actually you can get called on marking your cards if they face different directions.
You probably wont be punished, just told to fix them at an fnm, but in a ptq or gp that can mean a round loss.

Do you have a ruling number for this? I would like to check it out.
Considering the majority of players use sleeves, it would be kind of difficult to tell what's facing the right way or the wrong way.
Well thanks for all the tips

IPG 4.9 Tournament Error — Marked Cards - Pattern
It is possible for the player to turn all lands, or specific cards upside down to gain advantage.
For everyone's sake, just put the effort in to keep all your cards facing the same direction.

Thats the problem, many players slide their fingers over the top couple cards ti check which way is up since you cant tell by looking. I am unfortunately headed to worn now and wasnt able to find it before i left, but ive seen many nee players get warned by the judge to keep their cards one direction.
Thanks jester, i saw your post after.

A guy at my store (first FNM) board shuffled then just pushed it all together so his cards were all messed up and upside down
Board shuffled?
Pile shuffled I believe is a synonym
It is always good to be {annul} about your cards facing the same way. Besides the possibility of being called on it, it may present problems for you personally. For instance, say 2 cards out of 5 in your hand are upside-down. You could drop a card and reveal it by accident while trying to fix this.
Have fun at your first FNM!
Thanks coffee
Also who would like me to post how I did and what I played against?

Meeeeee
Yeah man have a great time. I did my first FNM 2 weeks ago and had a blast. The format was extended. Tomorrow they are having the pre-release for M13. I am not sure how they get away with that... So tomorrow it will be a draft. I am excited.
One thing I will say is that I could not believe how many people did not know the rules. I had a guy play a silverblade paladin (only creature on the board so no soulbond) tell me that it automatically has double strike. Another guy attempted to cast a sorcery on my turn and another guy attempt to equip a sword to one of his creatures during my turn...
Be mindful of your opponent and their knowledge of the game.

Your store drafts for pre releases? That SuCkS! Most are sealed tourneys.
Just this Friday is a draft from what they said. Saturday is the sealed.
Well also...
What should I bring aside from my main deck? Should I bring cards to trade or another deck to play with in between rounds?
If you want to trade cards sure but only do it when you can keep an eye on your binder and don't bring too many cards you can't keep an eye on. As for other decks there usually isn't enought time between rounds.

My LGS does both. I often play the first two rounds, lose, drop from Sealed, then Draft.

The old shop I loved to play at did both. Sealed starting kinda early and then draft at some where between 9-11.
It takes a lot of up front money to have enough packs for a sealed event, plus prize support, plus retail. Its hard for a most stores to consitantly and comfortably front that much money.

They're not fronting any money. Charging 25$ for the entry fee pays for the boosters.
They have to purchase the boosters beforehand and hope that enough people buy/ draft those packs to pay for their purchase in tine for the bills.

and then they put the rest on the shelves to sell. Smaller, start up stores might have a little trouble in the beginning, but established places usually have a good idea of the numbers.
