Title: What makes you tick?
Post by: TreeSmoker on May 17, 2014, 07:47:06 PM
To me its people that dump hundreds upon hundreds of dollars into a deck just to prove they're better than everyone else yet it's just money

And the fact that when i ask someone what deck they're using i get the response "i dont know, my friend made it and I'm just playing it"
Where's the skill in that? It's not even fun to play somebody else's deck.

Well that's my rant.
What's yours?

Haha.. I make all my own decks:)
I have people who play others decks
I may take an idea but I change it a lot..

I hate it when people tap permanents in different directions or tap them less than 90°. Also when people aren't using the exact inverse layout that I am.

I hate it when people don't stack lands. I'll answer this for a friend of mine even though he's not on here: when people play using ugly lands/theros lands

When I play supremely cocky opponents. To the point where they are literally not even paying attention to the game but are instead chatting with another player. Those victories are the sweetest.

Threads that should be named 'What Grinds my Gears' really grind my gears.

Anyways, people that don't actually know what their cards do, especially in EDH.  While I understand it when people borrow decks, you built the deck, you should know it inside and out. Especially in EDH, it's a pain when people have to take time and be like 'wait, does this actually do what I think it does?'

I also hate the annoying d bags that sit there and talk to your opponent and start talking crap about your plays.
I just think " you want to do this for me?" And the people that invade your play area with elbows and hands. One guy just reached across the table one night with his whole upper torso and it was extremely annoying
Judge didnt let him draft that night

Lol I recently started building decks for friends because everyone agrees I'm the best deckbuilder of the group.

I only net decked once and regretted it. What really gets me going with magic is when someone is like "Yeah I haven't lost in two weeks" and then they win. I also build all my decks and have a good time of it. What really ticks me off is when someone is sitting across the table with their legacy deck UNSLEEVED! I also get ticked off when someone asks to play my deck and I ask which one  and the response I get is "that aggroey one". Most of my decks are aggro.

What ticks me off is when I build a fun combo deck and the player I am playing against starts telling me without any ques how it won't top 8 a ptq.
Or when I am playing my storm deck and people just hate on it.
But mostly when a new player comes around and starts to ask questions about the game and people won't give them the time of day.

That happened once and i pulled them back, told him "they're are all different a colors sitting up front, 36 for 5.99"

He got pissed and threw his hand on the table, judge dq'd him. Lol

I don't mind people watching 1v1 games but last week I was playing a casual game but we were testing competitive modern decks.  These two guys were watching me and this girl play.  She was running a pretty solid {B}\{W} token deck and I was running my {B}\{G} Rock deck testing {master of the feast} in it.  Well one of the guys watching just kept telling her plays, blocking suggestions, and telling her to draw the extra card for the master of feast trigger.  The guy was erking the 💩 out of me but I just let it be.

Morale of the story..... back seat magic players grind my gears.

I am with Cltrn here. I hate when people tell my opponent how to play.

I like to actually test my deck against other decent decks, so it kinda irks me when I get paired with a new player and I'm basically guaranteed a 2-0. That doesn't help me critique my deck at all. I know that will make me sound like a total dick, but hey, that's the way it is :P

I hate when people aren't sociable and act like dicks. I like talking to my opponent and complementing them on fun plays and cool decks (like an odd 4 color midrange? deck that I played against last week), but some people are just too serious. I realize some people are just shy, I am talking about the people who are a$$holes, you can tell the difference.

My playgroup? Idk they're all heavy spikes and I'm Jinny and they're always assholes saying that they know best and I know nothing even though they only play standard, when I play everything but vintage and win? People like that. When they just don't listen
Also, Conan is right. Those people can stuff themselves.

There was this guy who was this smug douche.  He was there with his step-son and talked to the kid like he was a piece of crap.  This guy also just spoke to other people like they did not matter and his 💩 did not stink.  He comes up to me and is like "hey you interested in trading".....I'm like yea sure.  He says he wants a playset of {mutavault} and tells me to look through his binder......which I am not exaggerating when I say the total binder may have been (30) cards worth a total of $20.  He looks through my stuff and jokingly says to someone "hey I am going to rip this guy off".  At this point I am getting kinda tired of his 💩 and tell him I don't see anything in his binder.  So he asks if I want to play a game and I say sure do you play modern?  He says yes and busts out this deck full of proxies.  I pull out a deck full of Bobs, goyfs, fetches, and everything else.  I begin to stomp the hell out of this guy and his smug comments continue as I beat him.  The whole time I just think to myself....i am sitting here humble a hell playing a deck worth about $2k and you run proxies but run around here treating people like 💩 and acting like you are better than everyone here.

Yea that guy....whoever you are....you f'in erk me too [/end rant]

Ok, so this is a personal experience that technically ties into what I hate.  I don't generally have great modern/standard decks due to I am more of a casual, drafting player.  So it is a breath of fresh air whenever someone asks to borrow one.  Now when I get them back they offer some suggestions to make it better, usually high dollar cards I cannot afford, to which I tell them that.  What I don't appreciate is whenever I get the deck back, and they complain about it because they couldn't beat a certain deck with it (or some other reason).  They offer not, but forcibly tell you everything that could be wrong with it.

Needless to say, I like suggestions kept at a level headed manner of speaking.  If you start throwing a hissy-fit, I don't trade with you, I don't give you anymore decks to use, nope.  I hate it.

And that backseat magic player thing.  I remember my first fnm when my brother took me.  Was playing a Junk Doran homebrew, and was somehow doing pretty good.  Now, imagine this scenario.  You are chatting it up with the guy you're playing against when suddenly your brother (or family member) sits down next to you because he finished his games already.  When suddenly he starts suggesting plays.  My opponent just started to kind of have that face when you hate something, but you're trying to hide it with politeness.  And I told him to leave or be quiet.  Did neither, so I apologized to my opponent and we continued talking trying to block him out.  Eventually when we left I chewed him out for it, and he said that I would have lost without him.

Arrogant people giving unwanted opinions is bad.  Arrogant people giving BAD unwanted opinions is worse, because I had to explain to him play by play, why his choice was bad, lest he believe he helped me win that match, and hang it over my head.

A note:  if this happens to Any of you for any reason, CALL A JUDGE (or whoever is running it).  The judge will tell them to shut it.  If they don't, they'll likely be disqualified for giving outside assistance (and sadly, you'll probably get in some trouble, too).  If they aren't in the tournament, that's no problem.  The judge will enroll them just to DQ them.  It's happened before.  But there's a metric crapton of paperwork that goes in to a DQ, so for the love of Arceus, PLEASE don't partake in a DQ-able action

This might come across as me being a dick but I hate going to Fnm and playing with 10 year olds. Yes I understand that magic is an all encompassing game, but wizards recommends the game for ages 13+. I could handle 13 year olds without complaint. But when fnm begins and it's already past their bedtime I question the sanity of my lgs owner. And the kids parents for that matter, as they never stick around to supervise. They just drop the kid/s off and leave.

I hate it when morons tell you what to put into a deck and it's completely way out there from what you're trying to do.
It's very annoying especially when they just assume you got money to drop into cards. I have to earn them by working 40 hours a week. Mommy and daddy dont buy me stuff anymore

I hate it when people riffle your deck, by that I mean putting it into two piles and blend then together by bending the cards. Every time I see that is about to happen I tell them not to politely but some are completely douchey about it. One guy said I'm going to do it anyway so I grabbed his fingers and then he decided to be more compliant. That it had to come to that annoys me as all you had to say was ok.
I don't mind as much, except when people hold them bent for a few seconds before shuffling....

That's one of the best things about this game.  It really is a lot of skill to be good...one skill revolves around building.....the other revolves around playing the build.  So net deckers are at a 50% less disadvantage if they do not know how to run the deck they are playing.

Another thing that ticks me is when I show up to my local game shop for FNM and I place in top4. I get crazy looks because I'm not one of the regulars. Sorry, local guys, I can't help that my job and family only allows me to come every few months. Heck, last time I went to FNM was around christmas; it was modern and we split the top2 because of time. I was playing Merfolk. I got a lot of bad looks that night because I wasn't playing a "tier" deck. Even the one guy I've always enjoyed playing against since he is one of the most courteous players i've met was disagreeable that night. I haven't gone back since, mainly because of job and family. The next time I'll probably be able to play is M15 Game Day, so I expect a lot of bad looks again, since I'm not a regular.

The ones that piss me off is the ones that "I've been playing longer than you, so I know all the rules better than you" those people piss me off because they try and push rookies into rules that are nowhere near accurate.

A good player will help you to understand the rules better

But there is a distinct difference between those who know that rules and do this and those who don't. For example, I had a friend tell another friend that if you use {Hidden Strings} and choose a creature as a target twice (aka tap and untap it) it triggers heroic twice. I also had a guy argue with me that he could {Unsummon} a creature in his graveyard.

I also hate if you play a girl and there is um clevage.. Like where do I look???? Distraction much.. Gosh

If you can't handle not staring at a lady's chest just because her shirt is low cut, then maybe going out in public isn't for you.

that's pretty much it. He called judge. Ivan sent over a guy who was shadowing to see if he could figure it out. That guy called Ivan over, who said "seriously. You're expected to have everything you need for your match, which includes paper and pen. Next time, there will be bigger repercussions".

If anyone lives in San Francisco area, give me a heads up and hopefully you can come to an fnm with me!

Yes it is a game. But once you get to a big tournament money is involved. Then it becomes more then just a game.

But what if one doesn't tap the land yet?? Can he still decide what to tap it for???
Is it considered tapped as soon as you touch it, or announce ability

It is considered tapped as soon as it is turned sideways at a 90 degree angle.  At that time you announce for what color, and that is it.  No takebacksies
I wish that was part of the ruling.

Rule 109.53a: "a land is declared tapped when it is 90° from its controller. There are no takesbacksies".

Riffle shufflers, especially when they commit that horrible crime on MY cards, if I offer you my deck to cut and you riffle shuffle it instead, that's asking for a punch in the throat

I believe the official rules of cutting state they have all rights to rifle shuffle. That's like saying it irks you when a player draws a card, it's just part of the game ;p

But if rifle-ing isn't allowed please correct me and I'll delete this post :)

On another note, what irks me is when players play with their lands in front on nonlands... Most confusing and convoluted blocking phases ever

I also build all my decks and have a good time of it. What really ticks me off is when someone is sitting across the table with their legacy deck UNSLEEVED! I also get ticked off when someone asks to play my deck and I ask which one  and the response I get is "that aggroey one". Most of my decks are aggro.

I never use sleeves. Ever.

It's extra money that I don't need to spend. They make my deck huge and slippery. (minds out of the gutters, y'all.) And if I want to keep the cards in decent condition, I'll just play on a clean table with clean hands.

Actually it ends up being worth the small price you pay in the end. Playing without sleeves will lower the value of your cards.

The first time I went to an official event was Theros pre release and game 1 was against my county champion.
He spent the whole game loudly sighing at my plays, laughing and yelling at his friends and untaping his cards when I wasn't finished. He beat me 2-0 and afterwards said "damn I came here because I thought I would get to play against good players."
I've played against him since and had a judge give him a warning but players like this really put me off playing outside my group if friends.
I'm going to a modern tournament on Wednesday and he's going to be there. I'm dying to beat him just so I can quote him.

.love. people like this.

I hate when players don't look at me or laugh ... That said, when my opponent laughs and we joke around and stuff, those are hands down to best games

Or those super clutch games that win with a top deck and you guys have been neck and neck the entire game, that's the reason I play. Even games I lose that happen that way are way more enjoyable than games I win against players who get angry or depressed or upset

I had one game back when I played Grixis control that he played {Elspeth Suns Champion} and I top decked {Dreadbore}. He out loud said ".love. you!, no I mean .love. Dreadbore!" Trying to correct himself.... He also said .love. you to me when I dropped {Jace Memory Adept} on him. I hate that guy >.>

Yes! My friend did this  one time with a Gruul deck, and I said that just about every deck ever is going to take him down, because they can mess up his combo. He responded with saying that if they were running mono Blue control and had out 6 4/4 creatures and it was turn 3 they would win. 😓

I have an irrational irritation with people who create their own cards and word them wrong. For example:

Rubbadub Nubblers          {2}{U}{R}

{U}{U},{T}: Target creature is returned to its owner's hand.
{R}{R},{T}: Deal 2 damage to target creature or player.

should be

Rubbadub Nubblers          {2}{U}{R}

{U}{U},{T}: Return target creature to its owner's hand.
{R}{R},{T}: Rubbadub Nubblers deals 2 damage to target creature or player.

Like just read {Unsummon} or {Shock}.

I don't know if it has already been said, but my least favorite thing is getting a solid 30-45 minutes into a game of 4+ player commander, and then somebody gets a lucky draw and infinite combo's/some other stupid situation where they can simply go... "I win." and then that's the end of the game. My playgroup combats this by continuing the game regardless, but there are always that group of people who claim "a win is a win" regardless of how much a .flavor text. that person is. I don't care if I win or lose, I just want to play an intense, fun game. I don't wanna have to run an edh full of counterspells and all of the other things that make games aggravating. You can only hear "I'll path it" so many times before you just wanna flip a table or two. Homebrew janky cranky decks are -ALWAYS- more fun than highly professional netdecks. :-/ that is what grinds my gears.
Just out of curiosity, what gets censored to flavor text?
8 = D head?
