Title: Slivers for Commander?
Post by: Butch1977 on November 08, 2013, 01:17:21 PM
I'm wanting to start playing Commander and really have no idea how to build a Commander deck. So was thinking of turning to the good old slivers. Anyone else run one or been up against one? How did it go?

Sliver decks and {Kaalia of the Vast} decks tend to build themselves. Throw {Sol Ring} and 98 other cards with the name "Sliver". You can get an oversized {Sliver Queen} (or a real one of you're so inclined) and/or {Sliver Overlord}.

I've played against them, it's just a big sliver deck...plays the same basically. Not a bad starting point for someone breaking into commander.

Yeah that was what I figured, Slivers are the easiest build in the game in my opinion. They used to drive people to the point of madness back in the day that it became frowned upon to play slivers in a lot of groups. Didnt know if I would get that "sliver" eye roll from other people when I pulled out {sliver overlord}. Thanks for the info

Im a pretty understanding person...until someone plays slivers. One of the few things I hate in magic. I just dont like their design, or cards associated. The idea is cool but I dont believe magic has a home for that idea.

Easy but fun commanders to start out with in my opinion are:
{Omnath, Locus of Mana},  {Mikaeus, the Lunarch}, {Derevi, Empyrial Tactician},  {Purphoros, God of the Forge}, and {Animar, Soul of Elements}

I honestly used to loathe sliver decks back in the day. I'm like you. Awsome concept but it got a little overboard somehow. I was actually suprised when M14 brought a few in. I never thought they would come back after all the complaints with them.

The Sliver plan is generally a pretty easy, beginner strategy. Just dump creatures onto the battlefield, make them stronger, turn them sideways for wins. Slivers suffer from obvious other Zerg style pitfalls - like running out of cards, board sweepers, fog, discard and sacrifice.

The precons have more interesting playstyles IMO. Slivers are kinda just...obvious...

Fixxed my post. Ill also add  {Kresh the Bloodbraided}, {Karador, Ghost Chieftain}, and {Doran, the Siege Tower}

Also I just started my EDH career lol I play {Uril, the Miststalker} and he great almost too great though :( like it has no interaction whatsoever and in a casual format I don't like that part

My first EDH deck was slivers (I use overlord, tutoring helps with consistency and answers) The mana base will be fairly pricey, but if this is the route you want to go I have tons of extras I've taken out for foil versions, such as

{Mana echoes}
{Patriarchs bidding}
{Pulmonic Sliver}
{Harsh Mercy}

I like my Esper  {Merieke Ri Berit} deck

{Mayael the Anima} is fun also

{Jenara, Asura of War}

I love   My {Trostani, Selesnya's Voice} token/life gain deck

And for Real fun stuff: a 5 color commander
{Scion of the Ur-Dragon} - so many useful ways of making people afraid of a nontap ability

A lot of info to take in.... Love all the commander ideas. I just need to go to a game night and watch. I bought all the Commander 2013 to try and get a feel what the decks do. Just gotta put in the time to study

If you already have the C13 decks, build {Nekusar, the Mindrazer} or {Oloro, Ageless Ascetic}, both of those are very easy to build and very powerful. I have a really awesome Oloro deck build entirely out of cards I own. And most of it is like commons and uncommons.

I have a sliver EDH deck. Let me tell you from experience. People WILL hate you. People WILL not play with you.

Haha

But by all means, go for it. I think they're fun to play with, but no fun to play against.

That is EXACTLY what I thought! Lmao! People still hate the sliver! I do to but I dont know an easier way to build a deck with those little alien looking poos! Hahah

Someone mentioned it, but I would defiantly do Omnath. He's extremely easy to use and very fun to play.

Or even Kemba. All you have to do is get some good equipment cards and good game.

Those are great mono colored commanders.

And both are equally very fun to play!

Check out the commander section. I posted a list for a Kemba deck. Very easy. Semi decent priced but extremely fun!

Thanks but have to do this. I sure it's inappropritae on this forum but i truly feel it's a must. Please go to http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?topic=30258.msg278849 and look at the Karn art link. Wow! It is probably the most beautiful art i've seen. Karn with Glissa by his side. It is sick!

I firmly believe that if a card is legal in EDH, nobody should be able to frown upon you for using it! If you want to play slivers, go for it. It won't be that hard to build it, but I have one recomendation: have {Sliver Overlord} as your general. Tutoring for colorless mana at instant speed? Yes please, sign me up. There is a sliver for pretty much every circumstance, so being able to tutor up the one (or ones!) you need will be very useful.

I did, it's pretty sick dude! Karn just looks so BA up there on his throne. I love how Geth is there too.

Right?! I want this on a playmat. Or hanging on my wall or something! It is a must have. I've never seen it before and one of the best Magic artwork I've seen.

Slivers are fast and aggressive, they can be potent against slower decks. I have seen slivers do very poorly against control decks however.

Yeah, they have trouble with contol. Lose that one sliver and it affects the entire hive.

If you have an enchantment or a sliver that would make all your slivers hexproof, now there's something to think about.

I forget which sliver it is but one gives shroud. That's the closest i've came to finding it.

Shroud is perfect because you don't need to cast anything on your slivers.

{Crystalline Sliver}

Still gotta beat the board wipes though...

Yep, you can't really get around that unless you have counter spells.

Old slivers grant their abilities to ALL slivers,no matter who controls them...

I like that better anyway. It sticks with the whole subtype of a sliver. As long as one sliver is around then all slivers should get the ability no matter what side of the battlefield they are on.

My  {Sliver Overlord} EDH is my favorite to play 1v1 as it can overwhelm the opponent and consistently combo out turn 5, sometimes earlier... That being said, in multiplayer you will get 100% of the hate...

Usually end up saying something like...I don't mind playing archenemy, just let me use 'schemes' if that's the route were going ...lol

I've played against a sliver commander deck with {sliver queen} as the commander and oh my god it's nasty haha those things get strong
