Title: New to this game
Post by: Mblitz on March 17, 2012, 10:15:06 PM
I am buying my first ever magic cards! What packs or expansions should I get if I am a total newb?

M12 is a nice, balanced set. DKA has a bunch of beast cards to start a deck around, or improve a existing deck. Anything from Kamigawa I give my seal of ninjawsomeness🔨

Welcome to MtG, the most fun and interesting hobby youll have in a long time :D. No guidebook, but MTG Salvation, tappedout.com, and this app are all great places to get your feet wet in the wonderful world of Magic. A deck builders starter kit is something that is sold in stores. Not sure what's inside it however. Right now I'm assuming you're going into standard so I'd recomend buying a booster box of Innistrad and seeing where you can go from there depending on how lucky your pulls are. If you can I'd reccomend going into either a spirit, Vampire, zombie, or Werewolf deck, because they are simple to understand and strong. If you have question on rulings you can consult the ruling section of the forum and well be happy to help.

What was your last hobby? I'm curious. Yes there is, but you'd have to buy a fat pack of magic cards. It's not so much a collection (magic the GATHERING, I know but that was like 95.) as it is a deckbuilding game. Id buy 3 packs innistrand and 1 of whatever you feel like, as long as its Magic 2012, Scars of mirrodin, New Phyrexia, Mirrodin Besieged, Dark ascension, or another pack of innistrand. This will ensure it is standard playable.

Checklists of certain expansion sets are found in their respective $40.00 "Fat Packs". Seeing as how you have $20.00 to start with, I'd either buy a deck builders toolkit, which has 285 cards in it, or a $13.00 pre-made deck, then get a few booster packs to help make it better.

Welcome to the game! :)

This guy has $20 not $1000. Legacy is almost never going to be the best format to join when you're new. I haven't heard of legacy FNM's either. Kawigama is too weeaboo-like for me anyway.

Deck Builders toolkit will give you a lot of material to make new decks. I'd recommend it for the amount you want to put in. If you get a Fat Pack, you might not have enough of a base to Make many good decks.
Intro pack are also a good start too, since you get a ready made deck and a booster to modify it a little. I still think that the Toolkit is the best place to start.

True, but if you are starting with 0 cards, Toolkits give you a good intro and fundamental cards.

It's kind of like investing in a single lottery ticket over purchasing a bond. Possibly try a middle ground and get a intropack. And then some other cards.

Mblitz, I recommend buying a Deckbuilders Toolkit as you already said you were going to, and from there on buy a few Booster Packs here and there. Also, FNM is fun, but I recommend finding a friend or two to play with. The Toolkit will come with plenty of land and cards to try out and create many decks. Don't worry at all about building the best deck in the world right now, just build some decks, and learn the rules. Get used to your cards, learn what color or colors happen to be your favorite. Once you get better you can then begin to make better decks! And this is super cliché, but practice makes perfect! Personally, I learned how to play Magic through a "Trial by Fire" sort of ordeal. My friend handed me a deck and followed up with multiple beatdowns until I got a handle on the game. Reading rules is all fine and dandy, but experience and practice is key. Welcome to Magic: the Gathering!

Loop, you're not being productive. He's not trying to pull {Jace, the Mindsculptor} bro, he's just looking to get into a game that we all love. A Deckbuilder's Toolkit is the best purchase he can make. It comes with a ton of lands and cards. He can experiment with many different decktypes and find his groove, with an Intro Pack, that is a Lottery Ticket, he doesn't quite understand what he's buying, and he knows nothing of the color pie, it's a shot in the dark.

I stand corrected! You seem to know your colors! Well for starters, Red is pure aggression, it focuses on killing an opponent quickly and dealing direct damage to creatures and opponents, drawback, not a very good color for longer games (that is, if your opponent can survive that long ). As for black, it is a color that relies on power and selfishness, it's a very good color for directly destroying creatures, there are also cards with very good effects, with some drawbacks, that usually involve paying life as an extra cost, or discarding, drawback? I can't properly answer that question I'm afraid, I'm a very biased Black/Red Mage myself 

Red has a lot of direct damage cards, like {Shock} and {Lightning Bolt}. It also has quite a few ways to make your creatures bigger, like {Claws of Valakut}.

Black can be a bit difficult to play, as black likes high risk-high reward cases. If you're looking for something easy black to play, I would honestly try a red/black Goblin deck. Our good friend on the forums Kiki-Jiki, mirror Breaker can tell you quite a bit of good goblins to play :)

I said that because I was assuming that a deck builder's toolkit is over $20 and you can get the most cards that way until he purchases a toolkit.

Welcome to MtG and iMtG :)

When my bro and I started playing some months ago, we got toolkits. It was a great investment. Toolkits give you basic material to start a deck and sometimes you get rare pulls. The great thing about magic is that when you buy cards they pay for themselves a lot, and don't depreciate due to time if you keep them in good condition.

Also, as new sets come out in new years, they change the sets that are used to make them. In September, I believe, a toolkit will come out with cards from Innistrad, Dark Ascention, M13, and other new sets. Current toolkits have M12, New Phyrexia, Scars of Mirodin, Mirodin Besieged, and uhm I think that's it. If you build Standard decks, purposfully make your best deck have more cards from newer sets, as they won't phase out fast.

That said, you should get a toolkit. Then when you have more money, get these booster packs: Innistrad, M12, Dark Ascension. If you have more money, get a Scars of Mirodin pack. Last is New Phyrexia. Or just get 5 Innistrad because Innistrad is a boss set!  ;)

Whenever you get rares or mythic rares, check the value of it on this app! Don't let people rip you off because you are new. Foil cards are usually worth more than non foils (flashy cards). If you don't like cards you get in a pack, don't forget about them; trade them!

And btw to that one poster:

Getting a toolkit is more like investing in trusty bonds and using some of the money to buy a few lotery tickets. :D For instance, my brother pulled a foil {Solemn Simulacrum} and a {Geth, Lord of the Vault} from his toolkit. The solemn obviously more than paid for it. And I got a {Drowned Catacomb} and a {Vampire Nighthawk} from mine. This illistrates that you may get lucky or you may not, but you always end up with at least a few good cards! It's worth it.

Also, even though magic is complicated, if you have a core knowledge of how to play, some rules are intuitive! If a problem comes up, you may be able to solve it without even a rulebook! (read the rulebook anyways though. Very helpful!)

For instance, you know about summoning sickness. You play an {Inkmoth Nexus} and a {Suture Priest}. On your next turn, you transform the nexus. Do you gain 1 life from the suture? Well the inkmoth did change to a creature, but did it enter the battlefield? Hmm, if it entered the battlefield it would have summoning sickness. And why would wizards make a land that could change into a creature you can't attack with??? Problem solved. You don't gain 1 life.

I hope you enjoy magic the gathering. It's fun. Prettydamfun. :)

Red/Black is very strong aggressive colors. Your gonna be killing almost everything your oppenents play. Downside in my opinion not that good of a defense however that depends in your cards. Play aggressive and your oppenents will have to play defensive.

Creature lands do have summoning sickness however, the turn you play it, you cant attack with it, same goes for Planeswalker lands like {Gideon Jura} I never said that getting a toolkit was a bad thing, I said it was the best way to go and is more consistant. New Phyrexia has more value so it would be the way to go when it comes to scars block.

That's not a bad habit! Then, if you find that you want to make a certain deck, it makes collecting playsets (4 of said card) and multiples easier, and the individuals will already be spoken for!

My friend bought over $400 dollars of Dark Acsenion...no Sorin

Wow! I couldn't fathom spending $400 on one particular set.. Especially DKA. Does he have every card but Sorin? Lol

The Deck Builders toolkit is normally $20.00, and booster packs are typically in the $4.00 range, though at my local card shop I only pay $3.50, saving a whole 50 cents lol

They should, unless your local Walmart sucks like mine and they never have the same inventory on two given days xD
