Title: Prolly a dumb question.
Post by: Calebestes on November 06, 2012, 06:33:13 AM
Okay I thought about throwing in a chromatic lantern or two specifically just to cast a nicol bolas in my Bant deck.  What do you think?

In Bant, no. In UW control, you can, but you will need 4 lanterns. We tested this combo with  {Door to Nothingness},   {Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker} and  {Jace, Memory Adept}. Works good with all type of decks. Only Agro goldfish can beat it fast, in another situations we have all answers.

With axebane defender guy, lots of mana ramp along with lantern you could probably cast anything. Just don't get caught out with off colored cards in you hand when you still need more fixing.

So why couldn't you in Bant?  4 lanterns and a 2 nicol bolas with the draw power of Bant

Nicol bolas is not made for Bant he is for grixis control

Why would you put a planeswalker out of their element? Bolas should be in straight control builds not aggro control builds

Where is it written that you can't play nicol bolas in whatever the hell you want?    Is it a law?  Lol.

It's not so much a law as a guideline as to where certain plainswalkers actually work well, for example, using Tamiyo in a UW Human Aggro list is absurdly bad

Also, using tibalt in a deck is bad.

Rivals ever is bad.  Okay you are using a control plainswalker in a control deck.  Am I missing something here?

Yes the control deck he's trying to put bolas into is bant. Not even grixis

So why is that wrong?  Why is bolas in a Bant deck wrong?

I can only imagine it would slow the deck down, bolas is like a 7 cast right? Even with those lanterns I feel like you could always add in {thragtusks} instead if you don't have them. When I made a Bant deck and when I had all the essentials there really wasn't much room for other cards that didn't help me win faster. Lets say turn 1 {temple garden}, {avacyns pilgrim}. Turn two {glacial fortress}, {chromatic lantern}? I'm don't think that's as good as a turn three {loxodon smiter} with a {silverblade paladin} and a {rancor} coming turn 4

Yeah, I thought bolas was enough of a bad mofo that no matter the deck, his presence can change games. Some maybe more than others, but always welcome.

Lol well he would probably come as a huge surprise for an unprepared opponent, could be a good advantage I suppose

Am I playing Bant aggro?  Nope.  I am playing Bant Control.  4 thrags and 2 Angela and 2 snaps.  The only creatures.  You drop a bolas on somebody with that deck and bam...it's game over.   It's like popping tamiyos ultimate you can't lose.

The idea is, if you're running control, you keep things off the board until you drop {Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker}. If your running aggro, you get everything onto the board ASAP, and don't have 4+ cards in your deck to dead draw because they do cool things.

It's not a written rule, but it's generally a good philosophy to follow. {Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker} is an amazing card, it isn't for all decks. For the record, {Chromatic Lantern} is a great card for mana fixing, if you've got to extend yourself, it's generally a better practice to not extend yourself.
