Magic Online is a ton cheaper, besides some mythics. Like Wingnut said, you can play games any time. It really does make you a better Magic player. I don't know why so many play PTQs and GPs without play testing on MTGO constantly. It just seems like throwing money away. The more you play the better you get. MTGO has the best competition in the world, no joke.

Yeah, if I had a dollar for every time I get run over online, my collection would be way bigger.

The only thing is, I play paper Magic also. It would cost a ton to play both and when you redeem for paper cards, you lose the digital ones, so even that wouldn't work.

How much paper do you play? I realized I wasn't playing nearly enough to devote all that money to Standard every year. So I kept my Commander decks in paper and play online. If you really want to play because you want to be a professional, you have to do Online and paper. If you like to just play because you like to play, Online is the way to go. If you like being social, paper is probably better. But if you're not playing for money, some of those paper decks will kill you. It's harder to playtest in paper too, because you can't just pick up games and test different cards.

Every set that comes online, a few weeks after it's been drafted I buy a playset of Commons and Uncommons. Some instances they cost as low as $7. That is significant because at any given time, I have hundreds of Standard cards. The step after that is getting some chase cards, which are super cheap considering most of the sets never go out of print until rotation. You can still get Return to Ravnica and whatnot. You can jump into Standard fairly cheap. The chase mythics are expensive because of set redemption. If you don't believe me about card prices look at MTGOTraders.com. Hallowed Fountain? $2.60. Deathrite Shaman? $3.10. Thassa, God of the Sea? $6.78.

I don't play a ridiculous amount, but I play quite a bit. I am going to start drafting occasionally and see where I go from there. How long does a draft take? Isn't it like 4 hours?

Drafts can take up to 4 hours. Most Swiss drafts are usually about 2 hours.
Drafting is a great way to build your skill level and collection. You always hear stories about people going "infinite". And it's true to some degree. The competition level is astounding, but if you get really good at a given format you can win like 3 or 4, and then play for free. You can also play with those MTGO "Free" Decks to try it out. I believe there are 10 of them. I recommend it so that you can get used to the way the online game is played.

edit: Just opened Mox Emerald in Vintage Masters. :)

Congrats. I have decided that because I don't play uber competitive paper (just FNM standard, although I want that to change, and when I graduate I want to do some grinding) I am going to start drafting, and play Momir (because apperently you can make money, albeit slowly, and I am willing to waste the hours). If I end up doing well (going almost-but-not-quite-infinite) I will start up with some constructed. Also, this will be good for me because when I go to college I might not have a group to play with and will go all in online.

If you end up joining send me a message at "Dudecore". I've got hundreds of free cards. They're not very good...but they are numerous.

LOL, I'm drafting now, it takes some getting used to with the controls...lost G1 to misclicks (stupid things with convoke) and game 2 to mana screw.

http://www.mtggoldfish.com lists decks in online and paper prices. If you click a deck you can see at the top left, below the orange banner, the price difference.

Thanks. You already have me hooked. Two things though: how can I send messages? It only allows me to "Chat" and the other person has to be online. How do I find out what client I am using (I think it is Beta)?

Only 1 client now. Add the person to your buddy list, and when they're online you can chat with them.

I just purchased an account, I figured what the hell. I want to play more Magic but with the new baby I don't see us going to FNM or events that often in the near future. When I get everything all sorted out I'll throw you a request Dudecore.

I have had good luck searching bulk in the trade section. Use a ticket or two and grab a bunch of loot. Just be aware, a lot of those bulk bots don't give you a ton of time, so either go in with a plan or make it a smash and grab. I can't even fathom how much time I've wasted filling a cart and then get timed out and booted not even making the trade.
