Tonight at the shop this guy was making comments about me while we were drafting saying things like "girls don't really understand how the game works" and "there's no way she's going to place". What makes people think this way? I got paired against him in the second round and destroyed him, went on to place 2nd. It's such a shame that some men are so sexist that they think women can't grasp the concept of a game. :\

Coffee Vampire

It's a steriotype. Sometimes it is true...last time I saw girls at fnm my friend got paired against all of them. One of them didn't even know what infect was ..."wait so it only takes ten?" lol lucky bastard won every match against them.

But I love it when girls prove steriotypes are just what they are: steriotypes. Good job wuppin that guys behind! ;)

That is shameful to hear and please PM one of us mods if you are treated this way on the forum......which I doubt will happen but...  Man I wish I would have been there to hear that, I would have loved to put that guy in his place.  I am teaching my soon to be 11 year old daughter how to play and trust me when I say no guy better not treat her or any other girl/woman like that in front of me. 😡. You don't sound like a vindictive person but I bet it felt good to beat the guy in your match and get 2nd overall GJ 👍

Did ya name her Avacyn? ;D

Jokes aside i hope my kids will want to learn magic when they're teachable :D

How old was the kid? Was he with a bunch of friends there or was he on his own?  Maybe he was crying for attention or trying to feel better about himself by tearing someone else downer maybe he just doesn't have the social skills to know when to stop. I'm all for jokes but you can go too far. . I'm glad you didn't take it that personal but I see this all the time by high school to early collage kids ripping each other about anything.

Coffee Vampire

Guys generally think girls can't comprehend strategy games or card games...and magic is both of those. The best thing for girls to do is what you did: prove en wrong!

Fenster

I go by the forethought that noone knows anything until i see them prove it.
I played 2hg with a 35 year old female teacher who out of the blue played the {ichoron scepter} shut down and won us the game. Our opponents were shocked and humbled because they had been kinda rude and all brutish due to her not looking "capable". It was a pretty awesome game too since all we top decked were critters and they refused to scoop :P

I went to my first fnm a few weeks ago and there were two girls there. I only got paired agaisnt one of them and I did beat her* but she knew some rules I didn't know.

*Pulled a {Giselia, Blade of Goldnight} in a draft.

They are afraid of boobs that aren't their mothers'. Good for you placing 2nd :)

Most guys who see a girl playing a game like magic probably get overwhelmed by the thought and put up barriers. Especially ones that have no social skills. I have just started getting my girlfriend into magic and I told her that if she ever comes to a magic night, she will probably get stares.

Rass

Or maybe he likes you and that's how he showes it.

I think it's the stereotype thing.
Alot of guys do that. They feel women are inferior to them bc of their sex. I play Xbox. And when my fiance and I got together she wanted to learn. To I taught her how to play Call of Duty. She picked up quick and now is fully prestiged on Black Ops and MW3. She's pretty good. Girls and guys BOTH cannot grasp certain things. People just stereotype girls bc people usually see more guys doing these things than girls bc alot of girls are just not interested.

Thanks for the support, guys!

And yes, it's sometimes true that females don't understand the game. But the same is true for males! Last week I had to basically help his guy through both of our games... And even though I spoke slowly and clearly, he did not understand in the slightest what was going on.

And the guy I am talking about in the original post was lacking on knowledge of rules, I don't know whether he was trying to pull a fast one or two on me, but it wasn't happening.

Also, I was there with my boyfriend, but I Wasn't there because of him nor did I get into the game because of him. I feel like everyone sees me as a tag along girlfriend until they actually play against me or talk to me about the game, it's annoying, but it's also fun to prove them wrong!

There is one girl who is a full time member of my playgroup. Yes she is the girlfriend of one of the guys. Yes she builds her own decks. Yes she wins as often as the other 3-4 of us. Girls can kill at MtG, it's not a boys club. :).
