Sorry for this noob question: When, where, and how does mana burn apply?  Does it apply in most standard tournaments?   I just got back into mtg in a big way and am super excited, I just want to make sure I'm playing by the rules the best I can and I couldn't find any mention of mana burn in the rules section of this great app.  Thanks.

No more mana burn, so don't fret about it.

It's an old rule, and got turfed when M10 came out.

Welcome back!

Which sucks I wish they hadn't done that it kind of dumbed magic down a little bit and made some combos much easer to pull off

Thank you Jester.  I've been reading a lot of your posts and they are insanely helpful.

If you dont mind I had a specific question I'll just keep in this thread...when do enchantments "double-up" so to say. For example if I put two Animal Boneyards on one land, when I tap that land do I now...
A) Have to sacrifice two creatures.
B) Get to choose whether I want to sacrifice one or two creatures.
C) Sacrifice one creature because two animal Boneyards are redundant.

Related question: Every time I tap that land that is enchanted by AB for its mana do I HAVE to sacrifice a creature?  Or is that an ability I can choose to activate?

Thanks so much.  I promise I'll shut up after this. :)

The answer would be C, it basically give the land another ability, you can either choose to use the land as mana by tapping it, or use the ability the land now has of "tap: sacrifice to gain life"

Putting two on one land would just give the land the ability twice, but you could only tap it once for one ability.

Wow thanks.  You guys are legit.  I appreciate the quick reply.

No problem, if the enchantment said something like "whenever enchanted land is tapped, sacrifice a creature, you gain life equal to its toughness" then they would stack and every time you used the land for mana you could hve to sacrifice.

But enchantments that give abilities to permanents is just like having more abilities on the one card, you can only activate one at a time.

If you had excess mana in your mana pool, it did damage to you. So you had to use exact amounts of mana to cast your spells, and were punished for having more than you can use.  For example if you used {dark ritual} on turn 1 to play a card with CMC 2, that extra 1 mana would burn you for 1 if you didn't use it.

I, for one, am glad they got rid of it.

{Tolarian Academy} Always hurt me in the end. :(

I loathe mana burn.  I get the same reaction from my group (we still use it   :'() You should learn to do the math.  I don't like the idea of being punished for having to much of a good thing.  It's like "Sorry sir, you have too much money in your bank account.  We're going to kick you in the balls if you don't use it all by the end of the month."   >:(

My main issue is that it's a net negative effect.  Say you are getting land screwed.  You have one {Swamp} in play, two {Dark Ritual}s, a {Child of Night} and a {Vampire Nocturnus} and you're at one life.  You have plenty of opportunity in your hand, you just can't do anything.  You're being punished for having too much of something you're supposed to want lots of anyway.

Even if you were at 20 life, when you take mana burn, you are in a worse position, but nobody did it to you.  You feel bad from the loss of life, but no one gets to feel better for having dealt you damage.  It's the game givin' it to ya.

I'm glad they deleted it.  Now I wish my crew would ditch it.  *sigh*  :-\
