Are planeswalker's abilities activated abilities. Basically can I stop them with {Faith's Fetters}?

Ghebert

Good question! One would assume they are activated abilities. I beileve they go on the stack maybe. But can't be countered. Will look into it.

Ghebert

So here's what I got on this.

306.5d
Each planeswalker has a number of loyalty abilities, which are activated abilities with loyalty symbols in their costs. Loyalty abilities follow special rules: A player may activate a loyalty ability of a permanent he or she controls any time he or she has priority and the stack is empty during a main phase of his or her turn, but only if none of that permanent's loyalty abilities have been activated that turn.

Ghebert

Glad to be of help.

Phat Max

Side note: {Rings of Brightheart} work with planeswalkers.

Deathstorm

Does that mean they get double the loyalty counters they would normally get

I dont think so since its the cost not the ability.

No. You aren't activating the ability twice. You are only activating it once and then copying it.

Also, it was never answered.
Yes, {Faith's Fetters} will work.

{Clockspinning} and {Doubling Season} type effects would work to give your pws more loyalty. Also, proliferating.

{Doubling Season} only doubles the loyalty counters that PWs come in with, it doesn't double how many counters get added when you activate a loyalty ability.

It will double other effects that add counters to PWs, like proliferate.

But wouldn't the ability place counters on the walker?

Hakuu

Is that because the loyalty counters are the cost of that ability?

Think of +loyalty like gaining life. You add counters on it, but it's different with planeswalkers I believe. Although, you can't use life gain spells and abilities on them either.

Precisely.  DS says:
"If an effect would place one or more counters on a permanent you control, it places twice that many of those counters on that permanent instead"

Adding counters by activating a PW's ability is a cost, not an effect.
