Im in Philly, but I'd be willing to Skype, FaceTime, iChat, etc. if anyone is interested in lending their expert advice. I haven't built a deck in years, and I've a ton of new cards so I would appreciate any help I can get!

Standard build?  Legacy?  Casual?

Welcome!

Here's some tips that we've been sharing with another new player:

Well, I'm sure this topic has been addressed a million times, so feel free to point me in the right direction. I'm leanin towards standard deck. I haven't played seriously in years, and finally have friends that are interested in picking up some cards. I currently have about 2500 cards, although some of them are almost 20 years old haha. I have been out of the rules for so long that I'm overwhelmed at where to even start. I have my cards sorted by mana and by colour...and am now at a loss haha

I  made my own comeback with the exact same situation. Feel free to pm me with questions.

For example, an aggro deck, (quick, cheap creatures and spells for the early win) is one of the best decks to build to get back into the game while you are learning the new rules. I had it a little easier as a historical burn player, burn is alive and well in the new meta.

This app is a tremendous tool.  You can view a card that you don't understand something about and click in rulings to see the official rulings that have been made.  That helps clear up a lot of things.  You can also open the actual rule book and search key words.

You can go about creating a standard deck many ways.  I get a lot of ideas from the decks people post here, searching deck ideas online, or against competitors on Cockatrice.

If you're not shy about spending a bit more money, do what I did to break into the scene. Buy an Event Deck that looks like it suits your playstyle and slowly tweak to perfection. The new white/blue deck looks really good.

Otherwise just pick a Lord ({Lord of the Unreal}, {Drogskol Captain}) or really cool card with lots of potential ({Gisela, Blade of Goldknight}, {Bruna, Light of Alabaster}) and build a deck around it using cards that lend lots of synergy.

Beyond that I'm sure anyone here will answer your deck building questions in private or openly. I happen to know that one jester and one death gaara are very knowledgable and helpful.

Event Decks are BOSS!  Great value, high power stuff!  It will also have a bit of a "cheat sheet" and "How to Play Magic" insert that should help get you back up to speed.

There have been some rules changes in recent years.  Planeswalkers are a new card-type, so you might want to check them out.

Find a flavor you like, pick something simple to start. Maybe a theme, a tribe, something your comfortable with, and stick with a color or 2. Your deck doesn't have to be super competitive until you've gotten your Rhythm.

Looking through the gatherer at all current legal standard cards never hurts with the filter. This app is also very easy to use when browsing expansions

I'm available to Skype whenever
