1. can players cast spells in response to useing one of the walkers abilities?

2. can you cast {Ghostfire} on a planeswalker? my friend said you could because "they are like extra players". I said they weren't but let him hit it anyway to save time.

1:  yes

2: no

1: activating a planes walker Is a (edit) ACTIVATED ability, ({stifle} could counter a planeswalkers ability)

2: planeswalkers aren't players, they are planeswalkers, However, a card like {dreadbore} specifically tells you that it can target either a creature or a planeswalker

More specifically. None combat damage, such as a {ghost fire}, you can target the player, but redirect it to the walker.

To be totally clear, you cast a walker, it resolves, you hold priority and use it to activate an ability.
The cost is paid - loyalty counters are added/removed. The ability goes on the stack.
It can be responded to - by {Ghostfire} for example - but since the ability is on the stack, killing the walker won't stop it.
{Ghostfire} is cast at the player! and non-combat damage redirected to the Planeswalker.

to be even clearer on the {Ghostfire}: you cant target the planeswalker directly, however, you can target the player and redirect the 3 damage to the planeswalker. You can only redirect non-combat damage this way.
