Ob nixilis, Unshackled

I have been looking for a really long time for a mono-black general (demon) that I can build around, and this seems to be my guy. Any suggestions into what this deck can run to abuse his effect more? (By effect I mean his take 10)

just from a quick search mono black has some things that can force your opponents to search their library to trigger {ob nixilis, unshackled} (even though that link wont work yet). so black has spells that let you search your opponents library and exile cards like {surgical extraction},  {haunting echoes} and {bitter ordeal}. but the finisher could be {neverending torment}. you could also run {maralen of the mornsong}. seems like a sweet deck.

Those all seem like amazing cards. The thing is, and I could be wrong so please correct me if I am, but does the opposing player have to search their library and not you search it for them..? If you can search their library and they take 10 an sac then that's amazing thank you for the suggestions nonetheless!

Your opponent has to be the one to search the library.  Sadly, the only card that can force a search at instant speed is {Fertilid}, which is green.  Practically ever thing else is 'may search'...  Except for a sweet card called {Maralen of the Mornsong}.  She plays very well with new Ob, if you can protect her.

The new Ob fits best as utility/finisher in a Mono-Black control/prison deck, where his ability deters your opponents from being able to search up answers, as opposed to trying to be a 'build-around-me' card.

Surgical instructs you to search the player's library.  Ob Nixilis says your opponent has to be the one searching their own library.  If you control Ob Nixilis and Surgical someone, Ob doesn't trigger since you're the one searching.  As for the second thing, you can totally Surgical a random card in their graveyard to see their hand and library.

I can't think of many cards that require an opponent to search their library. Maybe {Maralen of the Mornsong}? It's a fairly adequate board {Stasis} because it makes your tuck effects better, neuters tutors (hey, that rhymes!) and makes Fetchlands terrible.

I just think that with the deficiency of forced tutors (especially in mono black) it probably isn't ready for showtime. I will be playtesting it in my Stax deck because of soft lock implications, I just don't think it's Commander material.

I've been testing him out in just a strong monoblack shell, and he's deffinetly not the "build around" commander, but he's a very big thorn in people's sides, as well as he seems to do well as a voltron commander just like his other card.

Yeah he's really good at hosing my {Roon of the Hidden Realm} deck because he shuts down {Birthing Pod}, {Survival of the Fittest}/{Fauna Shaman} and every other good card in the deck. It's got a place in the format, but probably not in the Command Zone.

I see your reasoning, so what would you make as a monoblack general? I want something with power, as most of my other decks are more for fun.

I think {Sheoldred, Whispering One} and {Maralen of the Mornsong} are the go to mono black commanders. I am not familiar enough with mono color decks, but I believe they're the strongest.

{Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief} is strong too, just a bit more narrow as it requires your opponents to be into creature strategies
