Embed pictures

How are people embedding pictures? I quoted one, an followed the [ IMG] [/img] but it won't do it! It just shows a little blank box... Is it that I can't use Dropbox to do so?

You need the individual image's URL not the page or site it's from. So like in a web browser selecting to view the image in a new tab. It caught me up for a while too.
