Arid Mesas

Is it worth buying some {arid mesa}s for my modern deck?  It can function reasonably well without them (it's only RW), besides a bit of a shaky mana base, and I've heard enough rumors about reprints that it feels like a bad investment.  (Not that I'm treating it like real investing) I'm going to GP Boston and feel like I need them but don't want to lose a ton of money if they're reprinted in Khans.... Ideas?

Mattao19

Well if they get reprinted they will drop in price but the way I see it is that I'm going to be playing Modern a lot more and Fetches will always be in need for Modern so I'm happy paying $40 for Mesas! :P

Ekann1

They have dropped a bit, but my magic budget is small enough that is rather not buy something that's going to drop a ton if reprinted. Maybe I'll just look on eBay or something similar and see if I get lucky enough to get some cheap.

I have a playset  I would trade if you're interested and have anything that could make that value

I don't have anything close to that value. :(

I do have {Suppression Field} and {Blood Moon} in the sideboard... but whatever. I'm not sure if I'll have the money. I'll see.

This seems like a good place for a noob such as me to ask why fetch lands are worth so much? Why do you /need/ them to be competitive in modern? You're losing a life to tutor a land. I guess I also normally play casual multiplayer and EDH so I haven't seen them in action or used them. But please, enlighten me.

What fetch lands allow you to do is:

1. Fix your mana. If you play 3+ Colour. You can fetch any of your colours with the synergy between fetchlands {Arid Mesa} and Shocklands {Temple Garden}

2. They thin out your deck A LOT! By playing a fetch T1 and cracking before your 2nd draw you lower your chance of getting flooded.

3. It's easy to bluff counter magic/instants bc if you leave up a fetch you can threaten open mana in stead of shocking 2 for a {Steam Vents}

Oh I see. Not requiring a basic land to fetch and the deck speed. Still can't see myself spending money on a playset anytime soon, as I'd rather complete combos that directly win the game. (And I suffer from lack of funds). Thanks for the info.

The best way to "directly win the game" is to cast spells. The best way to cast spells is to use mana, and the best way to get your mana is through fetchlands and shocklands.

Always build your mana base first. It's one thing that can be used repeatedly from one deck to the next.
Your Modern Izzet Fairies win cons aren't really shared with your modern Miracles win cons, but the shock lands can be.

he is right. People complain about card prices, and it is usually land that starts it. A solid mana base is important to support your win condition. Also, a solid mana base is easier to transfer between decks, and will hold you back from deck building the anything else.

I see. I'll start hanging onto my rare lands. And looking out for them.
