So I just finished a game where a guy had a first strike creature and a non first striker he move to damage phase for first strike and we killed a block on a double block after that he argued he had priority again before normal damage was excited is it true or false to cast a spell like {pit fight}? Or would damage resolve before priority

ibtrickey

They can cast instants after you declare blockers:) so can you:)

Zellius

No this is during damage after blockers priority passed after first strike damage was dealt

ibtrickey

All damage is symaltaneous:) cannot cast cards

Ekann1

Yep, spells can be cast between first strike damage and normal damage.

this is incorrect. between first strike damage and regular damage both players get priority.

Really? But why

if all damage was simultaneous then first strike wouldnt matter.  i cant tell you why players get priority in between first strike and regular damage but its true.

FustyDavorite

First strike is in a separate combat damage step. This means that when the step ends, both players would receive priority, just as when any other step ends. This allows a player to cast an instant in between combat steps.

So why is this being brought up if they already knew???

Because zealius didn't know and so asked the question. The people who supplied the answer knew before posting.

On the Why: First Strike creates an additional Combat Damage step.  Damage happens, and there's a chance that any number of triggered abilities on deaths or dealing damage can trigger, some of which may affect how the normal combat damage step plays out.  Since these triggered abilities use the stack and can be responded to, players have to receive priority.

Zellius

However if no ability hit the stack why would either player gain priority as there is nothing to respond to as you are unable to respond to damage assignment and dealing of said damage according to the 510.2.-510.5, rules?
