So in Maro's drive to work podcast, one thing he has said they wish they could do is change the card backs.

When magic first took off, I could see that being an issue cause there was no such thing as sleeves, except maybe penny sleeves, but times have changed. I think it would be fine if the changed the card back, as long as it starts with a core set. The only thing I feel it will effect is standard for about 1 year, requiring the use of sleeves, but then it would be fine. Anyone that plays modern, vintage, edh pretty much sleeves their cards anyways.  Drafting is usually by core or block so it wouldn't effect it. Drafting multi set would require sleeves.

I wouldn't be outraged or pissed if they changed the card backs. It's do able.

What's your opinion?

Can't. It'd make the cards marked and unplayable and wizards would never require people to use sleeves.

rarehuntertay

They can't, simply because the cards would be considered marked.

The backs are the one true constant for the last twenty years. I'd be sad to see that change.

Remillo

They had considered creating new card backs when creating Arabian Nights, since they originally had wanted each new expension to work as a Stand-Alone game.  They decided not to, however, due to the marked cards reasoning.
Since they can't actually require a player to play with sleeves if they don't want to, they've just kept with the original Deckmaster backing with the mistaken pen mark on it.

Could you clarify this for me, I'm a little confused as to what this means.

You know that blue line that passes through the T on the Deckmaster banner?  Someone accidentally put that there and it wasn't corrected before printing.  But it fits with the feel of the banner, so no one actually questions it.

That's actually very interesting, I never knew that.

I think they should try something different

Except they've done just that.

Every card in Alpha has been reprinted. They would have to immediately reprint every single card to make it ok.

McAtoms

WOTC: Alpha cards require sleeves for tournament play.

They could absolutely change the card backs.

My thought would be to do it in a core set and if wizards was really smart they would include some kind of discount on sleeves in each pack. :-)

The alpha cards don't have to be used. All of those have been reprinted. That's why that's OK. They would have to reprint every card ever to make it OK.
